Regular readers know that our Labrador retriever mix Luke loves his fruits and vegetables! We’ve written many posts on the subject. He’s been seen here eating apples,Β carrots, green beans, and even radishes. One thing I had never tried giving him was tomatoes. When I wrote my post back in the summer “Gardening with Dogs – Is Your Yard and Garden Safe?“, I mentioned that the leaves of tomato plants are toxic to dogs (green tomatoes might be too), but red tomatoes are fine. One of our readers and blog friends, JoAnn at Sand Spring Chesapeakes, told us in the comments that her dogs stole cherry tomatoes right off the plants to eat them, but never touched the leaves.
When I was preparing a salad the other night with our late summer cherry tomatoes I thought of that, and decided to see if Luke would like the tomato or not. His reaction surprised me a bit! Make your guess and then watch the video to find out the answer. Be sure to watch the whole video, because it contains clips from two different nights.
Be honest and tell us in the comments whether you guessed right or not. Have a fun Friday and a great weekend!
I did guess that he ate it, but I had my doubts there towards the end. I wonder if he hesitated because of its shape and perhaps he thought it was a ball, or couldn’t quite figure out how to eat it.
Delilah will eat anything. She did turn down the end of asparagus once, but in the end, like Luke, she went back and ate it.
Sampson is very picky with fruits and veggies. He will eat banana chips, he will eat some frozen banana in his Kong, but he will not eat fresh banana. Delilah on the other hand, I think banana is her favorite fruit.
Luke has turned down one or two things…he rejected cucumber and something else, I can’t remember what now.
Oh, bananas are Luke’s absolute favorite too! My hubby has to share one with him every morning. π
Heh, heh. It’s a toy AND a pawsome snack! π
Who would’ve guessed? π
That was a cute video. I thought he was going to swallow it whole the first try, but he sure had a lot of fun first.
And to think we humans would get in trouble if we played with our food first when we were kids! LOL
Awe fought I guessed right but then him ate it π I like lots of veggies too but I does not like tomatoes. Mama finks it might be because they has a weird texture on da insides. BOL

There might be something about that squishing out that happens when you bite into it that puts you guys off!
I often equate Luke and Jaxson as being canine soulmates. With that said, I thought about Jaxson, and said no. Jax wouldn’t like the texture of the tomato, probably because of the skin.
I wonder if it was the skin that put Luke off at first too? Though in the first part of the video, he seemed like he didn’t like the taste.
My internet sucks and I will have to watch the video later. I think Luke will love it! I was just looking at all my cherry tomato plants by my steps and told John’s mom they were all volunteer tomatos as preacher and guilty plucked them and ate them there and seeds spilled out.
I wish I could trust Luke not to eat the leaves so he could have his own tomato plants! Well, the chickens enjoy plucking them down in the garden though, so some of ours are volunteers as well. π
I guessed no, but I didn’t think Luke would have that much fun playing with it. He almost lost it under the door, but managed to get it back with his toes. You’re lucky you didn’t have tomato squished on the floor. You could see how surprised he was at first taste. I’m surprised he ate it.
I’m wondering if he’ll eat another one or not. Since the garden is slowing down we don’t have a lot of extras to play with!
I actually did have to get a paper towel and wipe up some seeds that ended up underneath that rug!
I thought he might eat it because Bentley loves them. Luke was pretty sure that it was just a toy but I’m glad he decided to eat it. Pierre just carries them in the living room and stares at them.
Hee hee….I can just picture Pierre lying there staring at a tomato! That’s all Cricket would do either, all the while wondering why I don’t give her something better. π
I have to admit, I guessed that after he played with it, he would just leave it somewhere. Just like Callie and Shadow always did. And Ducky does/did. I don’t try any more because food is so expensive these days.
And with my luck I’d end up stepping on the tomato left lying around….LOL!
I don’t like to eat cherry tomatoes, but I sure like playing with them! Was it good, Luke? ~Wally
I’m not sure if he really liked it or not? The playing part might have been better!
That’s too funny! The girls do the same thing. They’ll take them and carry them around and drop them somewhere and play with them a bit. They’ll only eat them if I cut them in half. I’m not a huge tomato fan, so I’m always happy to share some of them with the girls if a recipe calls for them–it can’t hurt to have fewer than the recipe calls for when you’re sharing with something so cute, right?
That’s right! I don’t love tomatoes all that much either…they have to be in or with something, I can’t just eat one whole and plain. So I wouldn’t have blamed Luke if he didn’t either! π
That was fun Luke and it must have been tasty too!
I guessed wrong! Shyla is adventurous when it comes to fruits and veggies but she would’ve taken that tomato, played with it (like Luke), and then left it in a corner. That’s what I thought that Luke would do!
Great video with good music! Is it copyright-free music? I’m always looking for new sources if you wouldn’t mind sharing where you found the music.
I got the music right off YouTube, I never know where to get it other than that. They don’t always have the greatest selection but I can usually find something that works.
Dinner and a show!!! Looks like he had a ton of fun too. Kitty used to love playing and eating frozen peas!
Now that’s a cheap way to entertain your cat! π
Good job Luke, we didn’t think you would eat it(mostly because we wouldn’t have teeheehee)!

Cricket wouldn’t have eaten it either…she wouldn’t even have played with it! π
I knew he would eat it, why? Because Dakota is a HUGE fan of veggies!
BTW that video is ADORABLE! I love how Luke was “playing” with it first
Thank you, Caren! I think that is actually the first time he’s played with a veggie before eating it, it was so fun to watch him!
I can’t believe it, he ate the tomato. I thought he never would.
He certainly took his time getting around to it! LOL
Loved seeing him play with it like a kitty with a rolling toy! Never really guessed if he would eat it, wasn’t sure! Wonder what he would do now with another one, if he ended up liking the taste?!
We haven’t put it to the test again yet, but I also wonder if he’ll eat one the next time; and/or play with it again first!
Having Tu-Lei I guessed what Luke would do. It was great to see him play with the tomato like she does. The posts about the farm are super interesting. I have learnt a lot about guineas. Love and kisses to all.
I’m so glad you are enjoying our farm posts, Lorna, thank you!! xxoo
Haha, I ended up being right with my guess! When I read that Luke’s been eating all sorts of veggies, to include radishes (!), I figured he’d go right for the tomato, too. I didn’t expect him to play with it as much as he did though. Super cute to watch!!
It was fun. I figured he’d eat it right off too, so it surprised me when he played with it first, and then rejected it the first night. He’s like that with carrots now too. He’ll reject it until he realizes nothing else is coming and then he’ll eat it!
I would eat it… I’m a veggie&fruit fan like you Luke… bad for the mama she lost a whole ice berg salad that way… but hey it was a super good football …an tasty ;o)
Hee hee. I don’t think Luke has stolen any lettuce yet, but I wouldn’t put it past him!
I don’t think any of us would eat one. We have eaten blueberries right off the bush, but we are not real into veggies at my house. Enjoy, Luke.
Cricket doesn’t get it either. She would sniff it and that’s about it. I don’t think she eats any fruits or veggies unless they’re made into a dog biscuit!
