Luke has been getting a few vegetables from our small garden this year, first radishes, then green beans, and the latest is carrots! Did you know carrots are good for dogs? Just like the radishes Luke ate back in the early summer, carrots are good for their teeth. All that crunching helps to keep them clean.

Luke loves his vegetables fresh out of the garden, and because we garden organically, all I have to do is rinse them off for him. He is good about chewing them up, but some dogs might not be so not all of them can have whole large carrots right from the garden. I have to cut them up for Sheba, because she tends not to chew things as properly as she should. Cricket doesn’t care for raw carrots, but she will eat them cooked.
Carrots are low in calories and full of vitamins that benefit a dog’s skin, coat, and vitality. However, you do have to be careful not to overfeed them, some dogs might have trouble with digesting too many (I thought I might have given Luke too many that day, but he was fine!). They are also high in carbohydrates, so if your dog has diabetes, it’s best to practice moderation with this vegetable, or check with your vet to be sure.

When I pulled up the carrots that day and came into the yard with them, Luke was bouncing up and down trying to get me to give him one. It was so cute how excited he was! But he waited while I rinsed them off and then went and got the camera. He wanted to steal one so badly when I had them on the ground to rinse them but I told him “leave it” and he listened!

Summer is winding down, and though we’ve still been getting a few green beans (in spite of the deer’s attempts to ravage the plants), the carrots are the last of the harvest for now. I did plant autumn radishes and kale though, so we’ll see how those do. It’s my first time trying to plant them in the fall, so I’m not sure how we’ll make out. Maybe for the last of the carrot harvest, I’ll let Luke dig a couple up for himself, he might have some fun with that!
Do your dogs enjoy fresh carrots?

Luke is a good boy. None of mine would chew. I would have to cut the large ones up.
I don’t have the yard for planting (too rocky and hilly) but we did try a greenhouse this year and it was a complete bust. I think Delilah would enjoy the fruits of my labor if I could really get something going. LOL
It’s good that he loves his veggies.
I have a greenhouse too, and I put it in thinking it would make things so much easier. They are definitely not all they’re cracked up to be. I found it almost impossible to regulate the temperature in there. This year it’s just been a glorified garden shed…LOL.
gotta be the cow in Luke-his spots and all, ha-ha, that make him a farmer, and fresh veggie lover! Oh boy, I think he would love to dig his own veggies, yeah, good idea!
Luke you make a very sexy farmer! I love carrots too, but ours are little ones that come from plastic bags that mom gets at the store. Love Dolly Pees: I only like them now because Taffy eats them.
We can almost hear the crunching! 🙂
How lucky are you to have your own patch of carrots!! 🙂
Farmer Luke – love it! He rocks that straw hat. Rosie would be glad to help him dig up some carrots 🙂
hahahaha farmer luke, I love it. Enjoying his snackie, great photos.
We have an apple tree and our dogs love eating apples. I just keep an eye on the core to take out the seeds.
So funny! Katie and Bailie will eat raw carrots, but I don’t like them, as a matter of fact, I’m not a big fan of any veggies. I prefer fruit, but still am a picky eater.
Farmer Luke is one handsome dude! What a fun time he must have in the garden. Daisy loves carrots too, but like you said, she tends not to chew them well. I have to give her shreds that I make with a vegetable peeler, otherwise she scarfs down slices and throws them up later. But the shreds work well. 🙂
That’s a good idea…shreds…I’ll have to do that for Sheba!
It looks like we need to make a carrot dog treat, because Bentley and Pierre LOVE them too. That is funny that so many dogs enjoy them. ☺
Now all you need is a tractor

My huskies LOVE carrots!!!! their favorites are the baby carrots out of the bag though.
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
do you need a helper on your farm Luke? I like carrots too, my momma thought I eat it… but I use them for carrot-confetti hehehehe
Love the hat- such a cutie.
Dakota LOVES carrots! He also loves broccoli, red peppers (not the hot kind), but I never knew that dogs could eat radishes! Thanks for the info!!
I never knew it either, Caren, until Luke stole one from me and ate half of it! I had to run and do research to make sure it was OK for him, and sure enough they are! We haven’t tried peppers too much, I’ll have to try those too.
