A couple of weeks ago I shared about Luke stealing a radish from the bunch I had picked from the garden (“How Do You Train Your Multiple Pets?”). At the time I didn’t know if it was safe for him to eat, so I made him give it up. I found out it was good for him, and now every time I come up from the garden with radishes, he has to have one (or two). He loves them, and I read that they can help clean his teeth! My hubby and I couldn’t get over the fact that he has figured out the quickest and easiest way to separate the radish from the leaves so he can eat it. I decided to take a short video (it’s just over a minute) showing his technique.
Radishes are a cool weather crop, so ours are running out (we’ll hopefully plant more in the fall though). Luckily the green bean plants are just popping up now, since those are another of his favorites. I also planted kale this year, which we’ll all be trying for the first time. I can’t get over how much this dog loves veggies! They are a great healthy, safe, and low calorie snack for him, so I’m thrilled that he does (if only his sisters would be less picky).
What unusual vegetables does your dog like to eat (if any)?

I am really not sure that mine would eat a radish…lol.
Luke certainly was enthusiastic about that radish. I’m surprised he liked it so much, but I think it helped that it seemed to be part toy, part treat! Our Siberian Husky looked forward to a piece of iceberg lettuce every day as we were making sandwiches for lunch. I think it was the act of getting the treat more than the piece of lettuce.
I think you are right. It’s a game for Luke to follow me up from the garden and then to try to get one of the radishes. I do think that’s part of the attraction, and the fun of tearing the leaves off!
That’s hysterical. Luke is a very unique boy! Rita would look at me like I lost my ever-lovin’ mind if I handed her a radish. She is not much for any fruit or veg, but she does love sweet potatoes in any form and squash and she loves my homemade kale chips. Maybe you can make the crew some kale chips if your crop comes in okay!
I gave one to Sheba and she carried it around for a few minutes! Then she finally half ate it, and dribbled pieces out of her mouth (which Luke happily scarfed up).
I will definitely have to try kale chips…so far so good with the kale coming in, but I’ve learned many things can go wrong before harvest time comes….LOL.
The only thing we would like about radishes is to play with them!
Luke was amazing with that radish! I planted some this spring in a pot, but they didn’t grow hardly at all. I think maybe they don’t like being planted in pots perhaps. It was funny watching Luke inspect the leaves for any remnants of radish when he was finished. Cute video!
Thanks! I tried radishes in a pot once too and it also didn’t go very well.
Chewy loves radishes, too! I put some fresh ones from the garden on the kitchen counter and went away, and when I came back, Chewy had stolen one…making that his 3rd ever instance of counter thievery! I even caught him jumping up to look for more afterwards!!
I’m sure you never would have imagined he would steal those off the counter! Luke stole one off the ground when I was rinsing them, and that’s how we found out he liked them. I don’t think I ever would have thought to give him one.
great video I can’t believe he eats them up, I think they are hot!
I think that the type I plant are milder. Either that or they are milder when they’re extremely fresh, most haven’t been that hot. Luke and I are the only ones in the house that eat them!
Haha! I love this video! Great job Luke, you are a very smart doggy 🙂 My dad likes radishes, and we used to grow some a long time ago. I wonder if Shiner would like one. If she didn’t, the rats might but I’m skeptical… I’ve never really seen a dog that like to eat them before.
My parents always planted radishes too, I think that’s where I got my love for them. I don’t really know a lot of people that like them, never mind dogs! 🙂
I’m not a veggie lover at all, but my sisters are nuts for them. Just like humans, every dog has different things we love. Radishes are a bit odd, though.
I never would have thought to give one to Luke, if he hadn’t stolen one we’d never have known that dogs would eat radishes!
The girls don’t like veggies much either…I tried giving Sheba a radish, she wasn’t impressed!
Delilah will eat almost any vegetable, once I dropped the end piece of Asparagus and she picked it up and spit it out. I thought…finally something she won’t eat. BUT she went back for it. LOL
Sometimes it’s worth a second try! I’m not sure I’ve found any veggie yet that Luke doesn’t like. Maybe celery. I know Kobi didn’t like celery but I can’t remember if I’ve tried it with Luke yet.
Bentley loves vegetables! His favorites are carrots, green beans, and celery!
I’m going to have to try celery with Luke, I don’t think I’ve tried that yet. Carrots and green beans are definitely some of his favorites too.
That is so cool that he likes radishes!!! I never thought to try and feed those!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
My dogs think round vegetables —radishes, olives, beets, etc are balls to play fetch with, not to eat.
Since I switched the Boys food, I am finding more and more veggies and fruits that they enjoy as much as commercial dog treats. It’s awesome. I haven’t tried a radish yet – hummmmm
You might want to try them, you never know! The two girls won’t eat much for fruits and veggies, but Luke will pretty much eat them all. Sheba really likes cantaloupe though.
I could never pick fresh peas without giving some to the dogs. He is a cutie!
Oh, I bet Luke would like peas too! I haven’t grown those for a few years now.
ha! even when we have no thumbs we can do a lot of things with our paws… like de-leaving a radish :o)
We don’t give you dogs enough credit, do we, Easy? 🙂
