The sad day had to come when Samantha’s chicks moved out of the house and into the coop. They are 6 weeks old now and have all their feathers, so they were ready. They will stay inside their smaller cage for a while so the other birds can get used to them. When the other birds are outside they will be able to roam the coop, and later get some time outside in the run too. Once they reach the same size as the other birds they can be fully integrated into the coop.

So now what’s a cat to do?

Well, we gave Sam a new job anyway – “Watcher of the Eggs”. She is still hanging out upstairs, but now instead of chicks, she keeps an eye on these guinea eggs in the incubator!
Don’t worry, Sam, it’s an easy job. You can still lounge there on your futon. All you have to do is check the temperature and humidity on that a couple times per day.

There’s a long story behind why we decided to try the incubator, and we’ll fill you in on that in our next post. Sam may have yet another job, but we won’t tell her that yet. 🙂
I’m glad that Sam is postponing her retirement 😉 It looks like she’s going to have her hands full!
She likes to keep busy….keeps her young, you know! 🙂
Dat sounds like a pawesome job not too hard and you gets to take naps 😉
xoxo,
Matilda & Matt
Most humans would like this job, wouldn’t they??
Love, Sam
I guess I missed a post. where did the eggs come from, and how do you know which eggs can be eaten, and which cannot?
I saw that you found your answers in our other post. All of the eggs can be eaten, but if they’re out in the rain and such they could lose their “bloom” which is what keeps the insides of the egg safe from bacteria getting inside. Honestly, I don’t even know if that’s the case with guinea eggs – the shells are so hard I couldn’t imagine anything could get inside!
Looks like Sam is going to be pretty busy 😉
The old gal does need something to do, otherwise all she’d do is sleep and eat! LOL
I guess the good news is that you don’t have to sit on the eggs yourself … right, Sam? When you’re good at your job, you never get a break!
I’m surprised they don’t want me to sit on those eggs! MOL
Love, Sam
Are you going to ask Sam to sit on the eggs?!? LOL. It’s funny that a kitty wants a job. Is that common to cats?
She spends so much time up there, she might as well sit on them! LOL I think most cats would prefer to play, but Sam has always been a more serious girl. 🙂 Honestly, I always thought she would have made a great Mom, but of course we weren’t going to add to cat over-population. It would have been fun though!
Sam rocks! Sorry she had to lose her chicks, but glad she has something else to keep her interest now-she’s a beauty, and good luck to her protegee’ in their new surroundings!!
They seem to be settling in well, and got their first chance to explore the coop yesterday! Sam also got out to visit the other birds and get some fresh air.
Good job Samantha, you are a hard worker. XO
Thank you!! ♥
Samantha, we think that’s an excellent new job! We hope you’re being paid well.
She has started demanding extra treats, and of course we comply. 🙂
At least she is not having to actually sit on the eggs! LOL!
She’d probably be pretty good at that too though! LOL!
What a fun job Sam. I never seen that type of incubator, I used to incubate a ton of eggs. I stopped as it’s easier to buy day old ducks, but the incubator was a fun experience and fun to see the chicks hatch out.
Yes, we figured it would be a great experience anyway….we’ll see how it goes! We may end up with more birds than we bargained for or have room for though! LOL
Don’t work too hard, Samantha. Haha, just kidding, kitties know how to squeeze in their 16 hours of sleep every day. 😼
That emoticon was supposed to be a winking cat, not an angry cat. 🙂
LOL…that makes me think of our cat Don Juan. Even when he was happy, he’d look like he was scowling!
Yes, rest assured Sam will still get her 16 hours of sleep every day!
Having a job keeps them young! More new babies in the incubator? Squeals.
It’s going to be so exciting to see if they hatch!
Oh Sam that will be a most pawesome and FUN job!!!!
The eggs are much quieter than the chicks too. 🙂
Yes, you can do it, Samantha! It’s nice to see you, sweetie 🙂
Thank you!! ♥
I have no doubt that you will do a terrific job with any task beautiful Samantha!
Thank you, Brian! ♥
samantha that is an eggs-cellent job… and super egg-siding… we are eggs-cellent eggswatchers too you can hire us for friday night when you want to go out ;O)
She’s not too sure about that….Luke can’t be trusted with eggs, so she’s not sure you boys should be either. 🙂
I hope Samantha still has enough time to get all the napping that a cat needs!
We’re pretty sure she’ll be able to squeeze that in. 🙂
You are going to be over run with chickens pretty soon. Good luck with your new job, Samantha.
We do seem to have a new obsession around here, don’t we? 🙂
