My dogs have me on a strict schedule. If the Momz wants to go out on a Saturday night – say to a local fair to enjoy some country music –
– that’s all well and good. But if I get in late, way past my normal bedtime, I shouldn’t expect to be able to sleep in the next morning. Even though the Dadz is already up, and they’ve had their breakfast, my normal wake up time is 6:30, and that’s when they come upstairs. Sometimes they bring a toy.

If you saw my post earlier this week about the new Blue Whale toy, you might have noticed as our friend Sue did, that there were no photos of Cricket with the toy on there. Sue asked if Cricket liked the toy and I replied that she hadn’t played with it yet, and usually doesn’t play with toys until the other dogs have destroyed them and left nothing but a carcass.

She chose this particular Sunday morning, after my late night out, to make a liar out of me. At right around 6:30 I was woken up by a beagle with a toy, and her brother hot on her heels wanting that same toy too. It’s hard to go back to sleep with a growling beagle next to you. And then when they both start to do cute things and you’re compelled to grab your phone to take photos….forget about going back to sleep.

And poor Mr. Blue Whale? Please don’t tell our friend Oz, who sent us this nice toy. Actually he only has a small hole in him, just enough to pull all the stuffing out, and we put some of it back in so he still lives.

If you saw Wednesday’s post, you saw Sheba innocently snuggling with Mr. Whale as well. Don’t let her fool you….she put the hole in Mr. Whale, I extracted the squeaker immediately, and it all went downhill from there. Cricket would be right in saying “well, she started it!”.

Oh, and now that I’m wide awake and drinking my coffee? Yup, you guessed it.

I went to bed early last night, and luckily that is the pretty normal routine (we usually watch TV or read for a while), so Cricket and the other dogs were fine with that.

I just now read this post. I haven’t been able to read much of anything where a Golden Retriever is part of the story. So first, thank you for the link to my post about Callie. I need my tissue box again.
When they were young, Callie and Shadow used to wake me up on the weekends by resting their heads on the side of the bed and staring at me until I felt those sweet puppy breaths on my skin. 🙂 As they got older, they learned to sleep in too. Then, 7-month-old Ducky came along and upset the whole applecart. I had to go back to getting up at 6:30 again until she was old enough to be able to hold it the extra hour. Sam can sleep through anything, I think; including Ducky’s urgent barking when she has to go out. Up until this heartache with Callie started, she had gotten to the point where she would still be asleep when I got out of bed. But these last few mornings she has been waking me up early again. I guess it’s all the stress.
I’d agree it’s probably the stress and hopefully in time she’ll settle back down into her old routine again. And I’m sure it’s going to be difficult for you for a while to read things about goldens without getting weepy.
My hubby can sleep through anything too, but he does wake up very early so at least I don’t have to actually get up with the dogs, he handles that and their breakfast. Maybe some day when we retire too, we’ll have dogs that will sleep in, at least a little bit? 🙂
what a great mischief monday post, I love it!
Oh yes, we have the same type of schedule at our house! LOL Even on the weekends, I’d like to sleep in just a half hour or so, but rarely does that happen.
That is so funny! Mila also thoroughly enjoys ripping the stuffing and squeakers out. She’s the type of dog to sleep all morning, especially if we have an outing the night prior. Forget it, she needs her beauty sleep! haha Great post!!
Thanks! I don’t think my dogs even know the concept of sleeping in. No stuffed toys live in this house…NONE. We’ve tried every indestructible toy out there, and if it’s stuffed, they find a way in! LOL
LOL! My huskies love nothing more than to rip the stuffing out!!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
The trick is to take them with you to the concert, then they will sleep in too 😉
Good idea! 🙂
I’m right there with you, they need to be up at their regularly scheduled time regardless! 🙂 Shasta
That is so funny. The boys will wake me up when they feel I have had enough sleep rather Skip is awake or not. We usually get up at 7:00 for a quick bathroom break and early squirrel chase. BOL!
We do the same thing to the mom if she stays out late. Hey, our schedule is her schedule!
I try to have a somewhat flexible schedule so Mr. N isn’t fixated on things happening at certain times. Mr. N loves sleeping in so it usually isn’t a problem. On weekends, he can go till ten or eleven to go to the bathroom if necessary.
10 or 11? Wow…impressive! You must go to bed late?
Hi Y’all!
One more reason why I’m not allowed “free range” with my toys. Sigh…
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Hahaha! Looks like fun!
I struggle to go back to sleep when I wake up in the morning. Especially past 7am. The dogs are fine if they get their breakfast! 😉
I am the same way. I really can’t sleep in much past 6:30 on the weekends most of the time even if the dogs don’t bother me. During the week we’re up at 5am usually.
That secret tree rat always sneaks in and does destuffing. Another thing, as far as schedules, we wake mom up at 4:30am Monday thru Sunday
Lily & Edward
Yikes! 4:30 am! That makes 6:30 look pretty darn good!
Keep swimming Mr. Whale, you still have some life left in you, haha! 🙂
LOL! He still lives, even though his “guts” litter the house in various locations daily.
My mom can’t sleep in because she is automatically awake no matter when she goes to bed. She is the one who is waking us up in the morning so I’ve taken to moving to the other bedroom in the middle of the night so I am not disturbed by her early wake up.
I can only imagine a dog that actually likes to sleep in!
The truth is that both my hubby and I are early risers. No matter how late I go to bed, I am usually awake at the same time. On rare occasions, if it’s the weekend, I can go back to sleep though.
Oh we have totally been there and done that! Once the stuffing starts to come out mom tries to pull out the rest so she doesn’t have to worry about Taffy eating it. Maybe you’ll get a nap this afternoon? Love Dolly
Unfortunately, I’m not much of a napper. I never can wake up after one, and they sometimes give me a headache. The dogs had a nap though…LOL!
One of my dogs’ favorite activities is disemboweling (disenstuffing?) a stuffed animal. Then they play with the empty pelts, which apparently are just as much fun. Who knew?
–Wags (and purrs) from Life with Dogs and Cats
Yup, the empty pelts are a hot item around here too. Our yard is littered with them….LOL.
Now THAT is some darned good mischief! They LOVE to make liars out of us and it doesn’t matter a bit when we go to sleep, they have internal alarms!
DakotasDen
We’re very lucky that Daisy’s lazy side lets us sleep in when we have a particularly late night…or should I say “wee hours” morning. 😉 She pretty much goes with the flow when it comes to sleep.
You are lucky! We haven’t had a dog that slept in since before our beagle Kobi. He came to us as an early riser and trained every dog after him to be the same. Now that he’s gone, his tradition is carried on!
LOL typical. The dogs are terrible about letting hubby sleep in. When he is off hunting, they know not to try that stuff with me because I will not get up until I am good and ready.
HAHAHAHA……we can look EVER so innocent when we want to – even when surrounded by evidence to the contrary – part of the charm of being an animal in house with humans I think! It is rather CONVENIENT that just about the time we have driven our humans to the AWAKE state, we manage to drift off to sleepyland! Tee Hee
Hugs, Sammy
