I first wrote about our dog Shelby in my post “A Spiritual Awakening of Sorts“. Once we were settled into our new home, after just a few months, it was time for me to give into my husband and get a dog. I had never had a dog, so this would be my first. We got Shelby from our local humane society. She was one of two puppies that were around 2-3 months old.
Above: Shelby when she first came home with us.
Below: Shelby with our son during her first Spring with us.
Shelby fit into and loved our lifestyle back then. We were very much outdoors people and we loved biking, hiking, and canoeing. Shelby went on many hikes with us. She loved the outdoors.

Shelby was some sort of terrier mix, so the cold winters didn’t bother her at all.

We started camping so that we could take Shelby with us on weekends and vacations. She loved camping!

Relaxing at the campground.
Shelby also loved the water, and she loved to chew on sticks!
Shelby was only 6 years old when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma. We chose a treatment that would not be too stressful for her, and would hopefully give her a few more months to live. We always felt we made the right decision, because once her treatment started, she went into remission quickly and she felt great for a few months. When the cancer came back, it was with a vengeance. The good part about that was that she did not suffer for long, before she left us for the rainbow bridge. During those last few months, we still went camping and hiking, and she was able to enjoy life for a while longer.

Oh boy, mommy and I are all teared up, such a happy/sad story! What a great dog and though her life was short it was wonderful thanks to you. That first dog always has a special place in a heart my mom says. Thanks for sharing the story with us!
Thank you, Emma. I am glad you enjoyed the story. Your Mom is right about that first dog….she will always be special!
Shelby was a total sweetie. Thank goodness she helped you fall in love with dogs….or you wouldn’t have the huge happy furry family that you do these days! :). She had a great life and was a very happy dog. 🙂
Thank you, Sheryl. Yes, Shelby definitely paved the way for a much bigger family! I wouldn’t have it any other way now. 🙂
It looks like Shelby was a very integral part of your family – not just the family pet. What alot of wonderful memories you must have!
Yes, we do have lots of wonderful memories. She was definitely considered a family member!
Shelby looks like she was a complete sweetheart. This was just wonderful!
Thank you so much! She was my first dog (but not my husband’s), and I was completely hooked on dogs after having her.
