Mutt, mongrel, mixed breed….that’s what our 4 month old puppy Luke is, but we wanted to know a bit more than that. Our veterinarian was skeptical about the accuracy of DNA tests, but my hubby wanted to go ahead and do it anyway. We wondered how big he was going to get; and there are other things you can learn from these tests, such as what characteristics they might show, what their temperament might be, or any possible health issues they could face. For us, honestly, it was really mostly just curiosity.
We used the Wisdom Panel DNA test, which I had seen on some other blogs, and which my hubby said got the best reviews online. They sent us a kit, we swabbed Luke’s cheek, and within a few weeks we had our answers. They just weren’t totally what we expected.

They tell you the top 3 breeds detected and give a full report telling you about those breeds. So do you think you can guess the top 3 breeds found in our Luke? Just for fun, I am going to run a contest where you can guess and win some prizes. Here’s how it will work:
Leave your guess of 3 breeds in the comments below. Anyone who guesses all 3 breeds will be put in a drawing for the prize (that’s if more than one person guesses). If no one guesses all 3, it will go down to who can guess 2 of the 3. If no one gets 2, then it goes to a drawing between everyone who guessed one breed.
Now those of you who are regular readers of my blog may already know one of the breeds, because we do know what breed Luke’s mother was, and I have mentioned it many times. I’ve also suggested here and there another group of breeds we think he might have in him (we were right about the group but not the specific breed in that group).
A few things about Luke, that may or may not help you: He is now 4 1/2 months old and weighs 36 pounds. He loves to play with all toys, and to us has showed potential for agility. He is happy and friendly, but has started to show a little bit of timidity with strangers coming to our house. He is very food motivated. He is very active and likes digging in the snow and scratching at things. I’ve tried to share some different photos of him that show him from all angles!
I have $20 in gift certificates to the Animal Rescue Site store to give away, and there will also be some other gifts to the winner chosen especially for them and their pets.
Have fun with it! You can ask questions but I’ll only answer them if I think it really doesn’t give it away totally. Good luck!! The contest will end at 11:59pm on Thursday March 20th.
**UPDATE** Friday March 21st….a winner has been determined! Only one correct breed was guessed by anyone and that breed was LAB. Therefore, everyone who guessed LAB was put into a random draw and the winner is KURUK. Congratulations, Ku! There will be a full post on Monday when I will reveal what the other two breeds are!
For anyone who might be checking back, I posted an update above with the winner! Full post to come on Monday with all of the details. Thanks to everyone who entered, and there were a lot of great guesses!!
Do you have the winner’s or winners’ names yet? Also, I hope you have a wonderful day.
The winner will be notified later today, but the official full results won’t be up until Monday. I will put an update on here too though. Thanks!
Hi Jan!
Congratulations on having this beautiful boy as a part of your family. He is so handsome!! Mommy and I will go ahead and give our guesses. After much discussion, we guess Border Collie, Pointer and maybe Walker Hound? There’s so many possibilities. I told Mommy Schnauzer for sure, BOL, but she wouldn’t let it be an official one. (If I’m right, tell her she owes me a Kong Wubba!). We miss hearing from you just as we’ve missed visiting. We are all so busy aren’t we.
Thinking of you my friend!
Love, Pixel & Jenny

I’m so glad you came by, Pixel. I have missed you also!
What a cutie!
I’m guessing a
labrador
beagle
pit bull (looks a little like a pit bull I know)
What a cutie! I’m going to say
labrador
beagle
pit bull (looks a little like some pit bulls I know)
Howdy —
I guess Laborador Retriever, English Spaniel and and Boxer.
Sincerely and with friendship, Kathy Kovac and Kongie
We did a Wisdom Panel on our girl, and I feel it was pretty accurate.
I am guessing Border Collie, Beagle, and Lab.
ooh, yay I made it in time.
Here goes,
Labrador
Border Collie
And some form of terrier.
I can’t wait until you reveal the answer!
Hmmm. I’m going with Lab, beagle, and… just to be different… Weimaraner. (which I can never spell!)
Since we are new we have no idea who the mom is so we are grasping at straws! We think Beagle, Lab, and Pointer. Dad says who ever jumped over the fence last! Love Dolly
LOL…I think your Dad had the right idea, Dolly!
Newfoundland, beagle, Dane
We’re thinking about doing that for Diesel! Who knows what all he will come back as! We started a Facebook page for Tuesday’s Tails. Should would appreciate it if you would like it! You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/TuesdaysTails
Have a great day!
You should do it, just remember to do it for fun because the results may not be what you expect! 🙂
He looks very much like one of my dogs, who is part Catahoula and the rest unknown. So…I will go with Catahoula, Lab and Bassett Hound (his legs look short for his size). Whatever the mix, I’d say he’s going to be fairly large!
He is definitely on his way to being a very large dog, you are right about that, Denise!
We had a DNA test done on two of my dogs. It was fun, but a waste of money. Regardless, my guess would be Foxhound, Labrador, and Border Collie.
My Gidget is a 15 pounds wire haired dog that looked like a terrier as a puppy and more like a Poodle as an adult, except that her ears stand up. Her intelligence and behavior traits could be attributed to both. Her DNA test said that she was Poodle, Lhaso Apso, Chihuahua, Great Pyrenees, and Afghan Hound. The last two are rather absurd.
My Bonnie is quite obviously mostly Border Collie. In addition to BC, her tests came back saying that she’s also German Short Haired Pointer and Bernese Mountain Dog. Other than being large for a BC (60 pounds), Pointer and BMD seem unlikely.
Everyone I’ve talked to who has had this done, had at least one unexpected or unbelievable breed in there. Our vet warned us it was a waste of money too, so we only did it for fun!
border collie, dalmation, lab
What a gorgeous face! I’m going with Short hair pointer, Beagle and Lab.
pointer, shepherd and either boxer or some type of pit or amstaff, and lots and lots of cute!
Pointer, beagle and cattle dog
Going with pointer, done, beagle
Beagle, Newfoundland, Golden Retriever, Catahoula leopard dog…I have my reasons lol
Boarder collie, pointer, American fox hound…does adorable count as a breed? ??
Oh, I could cheat here, Jan, as I already know, lol!! But I am sure you would disqualify me! And actually, as our sis K and I said last time we discussed it, we can never remember it all, except for what his Mom was anyway!! Really just wanted to say that I love this contest you are doing, what a fun, great idea, and I so totally love reading the remarks, as I am sure you do! And I agree with the majority, and so I will offer my true guess-he is part adorable, part loving and part smart!! 🙂 You enjoy and good luck to all your wonderful loyal followers and anyone new too!
Hes adorable and what great markings ! Beagle,Lab and Border Collie
I’m guessing Beagle, Labrador Retriever and Coon Hound! Whatever the mix is, he sure is cute!
I am going to go with my first reaction which was Jack Russel, Border Collie and Lab. He is too adorable, Jan.
Thank you, Pat! I’m so glad you came by and made a guess!
I think at one point I had guessed Pointer. I am not sure now. Maybe hound? Treeing Walker only because I think they are cool. lol If I remember right, you mentioned lab. I don’t know…lol. Can’t wait to hear. He sure is growing up handsome.
This is always so much fun. Such a cutie. I’m going for wild guesses here and saying: Lab, Border Collie, Pointer. He’s a doll whatever he is. 😉
Wow, this is a tough one! We’ll say Beagle, Laborador and Terrier. 🙂
This is fun. I always wanted to know what Leah would come up as, but I never want to lay out the extra cash. LOL!
With that said, I’m terrible about picking out breeds, but I’d say along with Lab there must be something with similar markings, like either a hound or maybe some type of Setter. And other people’s thoughts about a terrier or a border collie sound good too! And since you said you were surprised….none of those are probably right.
Hmmmm….this is a tough one….I’ll go with:
Labrador
German short-haired pointer
Boxer
Well, the librarian in me went right to search for your post on his mom and was happy to see a breed I thought I detected…Lab. But the spots really look like beagle, but I think he’s going to have longer legs…maybe a Harrier or American Foxhound? (yes, checked in at AKC too) and maybe a little border collie?
I love that you went back and researched his mom…that’s just what I would have done too (I worked in the library in college!). He definitely has very long legs.
Me and Mama thought about this hard, and we say cutesiewooootsie Luke is beagle, lab, and dalmation mix. Woooowoooooo!
Well since adorable isn’t considered a “breed” i suppose I will make some guesses at to what he is! hehehehe!!!!
What a fun little giveaway BTW!!!!! Great idea!
So my guess is (drum roll please) Border Collie, Lab, hound/beagle ish haha!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Have to laugh at the last photo where he has outgrown the bed but still sleeps on it! I still do that at 7 yrs old and Bailie tries to get in the tiny beds she slept in just a few months ago. We don’t have any issues with our body size!
I keep wanting to get rid of that bed, but they all gravitate to it for some reason, even when they don’t fit!
Is adorable a breed? Hahaha! I have to guess that Luke is part Black Lab, Beagle, and Terrier. This is by no means a reflection on his saintly mother’s reputation! BOL!!
Despite mixed reviews, I found my Wisdom Panel results to be very believable – my high-energy, 20 pound adopted dog Ruby came back as primarily Border Collie and Jack Russell, and looks very similar to other Border/Jack mixes that I’ve seen.
My guesses for Luke are Pointer, Border Collie and Beagle.
OMD I love competitons BOL… COLLIE, SPANIEL AND LAB, we are with sand spring but we didn’t look at their answer. 🙂 He is super gorgeous and we had never heard of those tests xxoxxx
Mollie and Alfie
I am so glad you did a DNA test! I tell everyone that will listen to do one because I regret not doing one with Tynan. I guess lab, border collie and Great Dane. (And if I am right, I’m sorry there is no hound like you believed at first!)
Well, as it turns out here is some hound, but not beagle like we hoped! It was fun and I would do it again.
Those tests are fun to see the results. We have used them a number of times in the clinic, some we go yup there right others we are like WTH. I will guess, lab, springer, border collie.
I think this one falls under WTH. LOL
