After last summer’s debacle of trying to have flowers on my porch (Busted!! Cat Mischief!!), only to have Samantha pull them up and eat them, I started buying her her own catnip plants (next year I will start them from seed). Since we finished the porch and made it 3 season, Sam doesn’t hang out there as much plus the windowsills are all too low to keep the plants away from the dogs. So this year I put a nice catnip plant in a pretty pot up in our bathroom window, which has been Sam’s favorite place to hang out lately. I think it’s a hit, and a new spring/summer tradition for her. She’s been enjoying it and I enjoy having a plant in the window that I don’t have to worry about her eating!

What a fabulous idea. Lucky kitty.
That’s awesome! And I’m a little jealous. My cats are super greedy. When I grew them catnip, it took me weeks to get a decent-sized plant with good leaves, and it took them 15 minutes to eat it, roll on it and otherwise destroy it (and the pot I grew it in!). So we use the store stuff now. Bummer.
Jean from Welcome to the Menagerie
Oh no, Jean! Sam did a pretty good job on this plant the first time out, but it was pretty big so one cat couldn’t consume it all (not that I would put it past her to try…LOL). I’ll remember that next year and make sure I start a lot of plants! 🙂
Good solution! Mr. N won’t eat any plant-based things so I don’t worry about poisonous plants too much.
Looks like a perfect spot. Makes for a happy kitty!
Great idea to grow some catnip of her very own for Samantha! I’m sure she’s loving it
Love & Biscuits,
Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them
look at her, she loves it. I have wild catnip in my flower beds and MK could care less.
We think fresh nip is the best. The mom grew ours from seeds this year and we’ve been having a bumper crop!
Awesome! You’ve got the best Mom then….next year we will have a bigger crop of our own too!
This is a great idea. Can she ever eat too much of the catnip plant to harm her? My guys don’t seem to like the dried catnip that come in packets, but I bet they would love to munch on a real plant.
I don’t think that too much would harm her, but she did throw some back up once, but it’s been just the one time (so maybe she did overdo it that time). We once grew some “kitty grass” and our other cat Conrad LOVED that stuff, but he could not keep it down! We had to get rid of it.
Great idea!
Ohhh share some of that yummy stuff thissaway!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Makes PURRfect sense to me!
Your very own plant! Very nice
Lily & Edward
Definitely a win-win!
Giving it a good inspection!
Giving it an inspection there!
Only the best of cat moms grow their own catnip! Way cool!
Aw, thank you for saying that! ♥
The purrfect solution!
I love it when our behaviour is shaped by our pets!
They have some kind of power over us, don’t they? 🙂
I had no clue that cats prefer nip fresh from the plant instead to get a toy with dried nip inside :o) has catnip any effects on dogs too, or is it something what the canine world ignores completely?
It is safe for dogs to eat catnip, but I read that it can have the opposite effect and mellows dogs out!
Well, that seems to be an excellent solution for everyone!
What could be better than a nip tree in a sunny spot? My cat bro Bert would probably mow the entire plant down in one sitting!
Yes, I believe Bert probably would! LOL
I’ve never heard of catnip plants before! What a good idea and solution to this problem!
