I’ve always loved this saying, especially back in the day when we went hiking a lot. These days, while we stick close to home, Luke and I (or Luke and the Dadz) are often wanderers. We both let Luke mostly choose where he wants to go when we’re out on our walks. Some days Luke sticks closer to the trails, other days he likes to follow his nose through the woods.
On my day off this week, he mostly wanted to stick close to home so our walk was shorter. I decided at that point that I really needed to get more exercise than what I am getting with him most days. Since opening my shop, I am getting a lot less exercise and I can feel it. I know I’m gaining weight and I’m feeling less limber and energetic than I used to. I’ve also been getting more headaches. My hubby has taken over walking Luke quite a bit, while I’m busier, so Luke is still getting what he needs I think. But on those days when he’s slow and rambling, I feel I need a little more. Quality could make up for some of the lack of quantity.
I decided maybe it was time to start running again. That evening I decided since I didn’t have as much to do before going to the shop that next morning, I’d do a short run and then a short walk with Luke. Yeah, best laid plans and all that. I woke up with a bad headache, feeling mildly dizzy and nauseous and I knew I would not be running that morning. Still, I was determined to at least walk Luke. I’ve had migraines long enough to know that if I feel up to it, while lolling in bed feeling sorry for myself is tempting, getting out and moving is really the best thing.
That morning Luke was much more into the wandering; following his nose here, there, and everywhere, so we had a much longer walk and it was good (though it would have been better if he’d done that the previous day when I had more time)! By the time I had to leave for work, my headache had eased up some and my stomach finally settled down.

I will get that first run in soon, but for now that bit of wandering with my dog was just what I needed!

We miss Luke and the Dadz!
That’s a great saying. Hi Luke.
Happy wandering! Luke looks so cute next to that rock.
He was actually posing nicely for a change! π
I’m so sorry about the migraine (as a fellow sufferer) but I’m glad that the wander with Luke was just what the dogtor ordered!
You know what it’s all about then, so inconsistent, so impossible to prevent it seems. It’s so frustrating when you think you are doing all the right things to stop from triggering one….and yet there it comes anyway. π
Thank goodness for our canine companions to help us! β₯
I didn’t know walks helped with headaches, I’ll have to give that a try. Luke sure looks happy, and who wouldn’t – that is a lovely wooded area to walk in.
We are lucky to have such a beautiful place to walk without having to get in the car first! π
When I first was diagnosed with migraines, I thought the doctors were crazy to advise me to exercise, but it really does make a difference for me.
I used to love going for walks at the park with Callie and Shadow. I took water and collapsible bowls and we’d stop at a bench for a rest before heading back to the car for the ride home. The girls enjoyed our time together while Ducky was at daycare; and it got us away from the house for a while. Now the city is renovating the park to combine with the adjacent one in town and it’s a pain to find nice places to walk and/or sit and people watch. So we stay home. We’re probably safer from COVID here anyway.
Your acreage is so pretty though – I’m jealous. Hope your headache is gone by now!
Yeah, it’s too bad about your parks, but probably safer at home indeed!
Once I get in a bad spell of migraines, they tend to come and go for several days (or even weeks). Ugh. So I just enjoy the good days!
One of my friends loves to hike so I bought her a shirt with that saying on it for Christmas last year.
I imagine she loved it!!!
You have so many interesting places to wander!
Our bodies are so much happier when we get exercise and Molly and I love and NEED our morning walk. Molly loves to wander and meander too, Luke.
I really do feel a difference when I start to slack off; and so does Luke (he gets brattier, LOL)!
I’m glad you and Luke had a good time! Our Dad decided to take up running years ago, on his first day, about 1000 yards from home, he got chased by a not so pleasant big dog, that ended that!
I don’t blame him!!
wandering is a good thing… we prefer it before running that’s for sure ;O)
LOL.
See Luke is the best medicine. He’s handsome too. I know you’ll get that run in and you’ll feel much better for it.
Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Smooches to Luke. β₯
I did get it in, the next morning, and you were right! I also got a short walk with handsome Luke in afterwards too, so it was even better. π
We have heard about migraines and they sound awful! Hopefully you can get back to running. It is the one thing Mom can’t give up because it is the fastest and easiest way to burn calories. Too bad Luke can’t run with you.
They ARE awful, especially when they are chronic like mine. I got my first run in that next morning and it felt great! I wish Luke could run with me too, that would be perfect. π
Hahaha. It’s funny because I’d planned for the last week to get back to exercising tonight (I’ve gained quite a bit of weight too and I get winded easily) … nope. Maybe tomorrow? Yeah, probably not. I had every intention though! It’s funny, during the worst of my anorexia, I dog sat regularly. I loved having a partner while exercising … except dogs have a mind of their own and our walks NEVER lived up to my expectations for “exercise.” There’s something so peaceful and renewing about those walks though.
Yes, they are two different kinds of walks, with and without a dog, and both are good!
It usually takes me a while to talk myself into exercising too….maybe eventually you will get there (if you need more excuses though, I have plenty beyond a migraine. LOL).
I am glad the walk eased your migraine.
I used to take the cats for walks around our fields and let them wander with me following. The only time I stopped them was if they were heading for the badger sett. Very often we were out for 2 hours and it did keep me fitter.
Long walks are the best! We used to have a cat that walked with us as well; he was so cool.
Ohm those migraines, they hit at the most inopportune times.
Sometimes I get those if I do not have my morning joe…I used to get bad ones years ago, but since all my hormones are gone(Surgery for Cancer…) I no longer have those. Just tension headaches when work is too crazypants. (Or short staffed.)
Hope you don’t too many and that *that* one dissipated so you could go to work.
Wandering is a good way to let yourself get lost in the beauty around you, esp of the fall colors or the little things that you can see/find in the woods or the garden. Its a good time to meditate too.
I thought I’d be done with the migraines once I got through menopause, but I guess that was a myth too. Sorry for the way you got rid of yours, but at least something good came out of what I’m sure was a very tough time.
My tend to at least ease up enough so I can function, but they tend to come and go for several days, or even weeks.
Yes, there is nothing like a good walk to enjoy your surroundings and clear your head.
