Luke has an interesting technique for drinking water. I kid you not, a lot of the time he sticks his whole nose in like this:
Obviously, this photo was taken in the pool, but he does the same thing in water dishes. There is no doubt when Luke is getting a drink, because he is so noisy! He literally blows bubbles at times, and often comes out dripping water all over the floor. I put some ice cubes in the water dish to try to get a photo in the house, but I couldn’t get a good one. He would be great at a Halloween party bobbing for apples, because he had no trouble bobbing for all the ice cubes.
It has gotten to the point that whenever he is drinking water, my husband says “swallow” to him, like it’s a regular command! It doesn’t work…..here’s a couple photos of the flood he leaves behind (not the best photos but hopefully you can get the idea):
Does anyone else’s dog or puppy drink water in this way? My hubby and I seem to remember that our golden retriever Moses was a sloppy drinker when he was a puppy, but I don’t remember him sticking his whole face in the bowl. We wonder if Luke will outgrow this or not. He obviously loves water, and he’ll be going for his first real swim this week….we can’t wait to see how he does!
On a couple of unrelated notes: I was asked to share my opinion with the website Cat and Toys for the Experts Roundup – the subject was “What is your favorite cat breed and how can one create the perfect habitat for a cat?” Click here if you are interested in reading the answers. I was very pleased to be asked to participate.
This coming Sunday June 22nd is the Morris Animal Foundation’s #UnitetoFight virtual cancer walk. My sister will be walking with me and the dogs to raise funds for cancer research. You can read my post about it here, or visit my fundraising page if you’d care to contribute (any amount appreciated). We are walking to honor the memory of our pets that we have lost to cancer.
Thank you to our blog hop hosts: Alfie’s Blog, Snoopy’s Dog Blog, and My Brown Newfies! Please visit them and the other participants through the links below.
I have two adult pure bred Dobermans that stick their whole snout in their water bowl every time they drink. They have done it their hole life. One occasionally will blow bubbles in the bowl as well. Thank God for tile floors.
My 4 yr old husky has always done this. She developed chronic Bronchitis at 2 and we always thought it was because she continually gets water in her lungs while drinking.
I have two purebred pitbulls that are about the length of a coffee table, Bell and Mocha. They occasionally do this when the water bowel is switch to large one to give the previous ones a few days of cleaning & sanitizing. I watched carefully of Mocha that she uses it to moisture her nose so she isn’t smack her lips so often. She has a habit of not drinking water for a long period of time so I have to push her towards the bowl to take a few sips, simply dehydration as she sleeps throughout the day. Bell tends to do it to hint us that she likes to be shoot with the water hose so she can attempt to bite the hose line again. She’s more active and gets bored easily since her sister prefers to cruise around all day.
There was also an accident where a group of loose cats ended up in my backyard that attacked them when they were outside stargazing (We have a garden with fruits and it doesn’t help that the dogs have their water bowls). They were scratched on the noses and bite marks on the body. Mocha was more aggressive (pushing Bell onto the side) as she gave hell to the cats. Mocha would dip her face to soothe her cuts and use the temperature to cool herself whenever we left to run errands/school. To this day a big wound on her chest is still healing so we had to cover it with a ointment patch then a harness buckle over it to avoid Mocha scratching it off. She’s still on guard ever since the incident that took place a week ago…Always watching over Bell or going in front of me with her butt almost invading my face while looking for something. I started blocking ways for the cats to return and limited their stargazing but Bell doesn’t like that so we light up torches to steer any unwanted guest. The neighborhood started calling Mocha a Cat Killer, which doesn’t make me happy to hear but they seem to appreciate Mocha for her bravery since the same cats attacked a toddler.
My female husky Nese does the same thing I don’t even water her inside I water her with a small pool or a big bucket she can’t reach or tip over. She will paw at it and stick her nose down in the water the pool.she just lie in it and stick her nose in the water just blowing bubbles like nothing is wrong very funny. But I was wondering the same thing when I came across this site. Why she sticks her nose in the water?
My best guess is that they just think it’s fun!! 🙂
My 6 month old chocolate Lab Mokah drinks with his nose in the bowl, ever since I brought him home at 8weeks old. I thought it was the cutest thing ever, he blows bubbles with his nose while drinking. IDK how he does it, how can he drink the water with his nose under water? I can see his tongue hitting the bottom of the bowl, very funny.
I looked up why dogs drink w their nose under water and I came to this web site. If anyone knows how its possible how dogs can do this please LMK.
If anyone has the answer, I will definitely revisit the subject! Luke doesn’t do this as much as he used to when he was younger, but he still does sometimes, and leaves a trail of water near his bowl (or dribbles it on my lap!!). They do seem to instinctively know not to breathe in when they are doing it.
My Shih Tzu will submerge her face in the basin whenever she sees that. She will put her face in and out of the water. Recently she did the same to her water bowl. I am really puzzled why she did that. Trying to drown herself ? I don’t know if she loves water or is just obedient, sometimes after a long walk, she knew i was going to bath her, she will voluntarily go inside the shower cubicle before me.
Oh, I wish Luke would do that! I think some dogs just love water more than others. Yours sounds like a very good girl, and knows water is good for her!
Hey Luke
I’ve never seen that technique before! I drink in the standard way, but my furry beard always seems to get wet, so I drip water afterwards too and if I go near anyone they always know I’ve just had a drink! 🙂
I hope you’re having a fun day,
Your pal Snoopy 🙂
It’s fun to share our water, isn’t it, Snoopy? But the humans don’t seem to appreciate it – BOL!
Your friend, Luke
I do not know where to put a comment, so I’ll put it on this reply.
Yes my dog sticks her whole nose in the water every time she drinks it scares me I’m always afraid she’s going to drowned, but she is fine. I was wondering what breed she is mixed with she is Shepard but I don’t know the other type I do see the picture of the black and white dog and her ears and head shape are very similar. to my dog. She has Shepherds markings but her ears don’t go up they flop just like the black and white dog can you please tell me what breed that is, so I know what my dog is mixed with. I Googled dog breeds that put their nose in the water when they drink and it brought up your page.
I think dogs instinctively know not to breathe in when they put their nose in the water, so it’s probably pretty safe.
Luke is mostly Labrador retriever, and I know other dogs of that breed that drink the same way he does. So maybe your dog has Lab in it as well? We used to have a Lab mixed with a shepherd, and she was a great dog! She looked just like a black Lab though, nothing like a shepherd.
My dog Sensi is what I like to call a pure bred mutt. She stands about 2 feet tall and weighs about 30 pounds maybe 40. She is a red dirt road brendal color. From the time she was just a pup she always love to swim. She can even dive about 5 feet underwater to get sticks and toys that sink. She’s getting older now about 8 years, growing up she never drank her water this way. Also (Thankfully) she does not practice this habit in the house. It seems to be when I take her to the park and play fetch mainly when she gets excited is when she likes to stick her whole nose in the bowl and fling her head out of the bowl sending water flying everywhere. Because this is a new behavior I suspect she does it because she thinks it is cute which it is. As far as breed goes I feel it is irrelevant. What I think is dogs that drink it with this behavior are likely dogs who love the water!
I imagine you are right about that, Sarah! When I used to take Luke swimming, he was a bit reluctant, but he’s fearful and hesitant about many things. He also loves to drink water from the hose, so I think a love of water is definitely behind this behavior. At least you are lucky your dog doesn’t do it in the house! Luke doesn’t do it all the time now, but he still occasionally drinks water and then comes and dribbles it all over my lap if I’m sitting nearby! 🙂
Delilah is a very sloppy drinker. She is also voracious with the water at times it seems like she wants to consume the entire bowl! She leaves water everywhere, it’s like as soon as she’s done she walks away, trailing water as she goes.
I have seen her stick her whole nose in the water like Luke does, mostly if there’s something in the bowl that she thinks is food and I have also called it “bobbing for apples.” BUT she does not drink water that way.
Luke definitely loves his water…maybe this is the Lab in him showing?
I think Luke first tried it when he saw something in the bowl, and just decided it was fun after that!
I have a 80 lb, 8 month lab. She sticks most of her head in the bowl when she drinks and then splashes the water out with her paw. My floor is constantly soaked. Thank goodness I have tile. She loves the water and going to the beach, so I’m wondering if she still think she’s swimming? Either way, it’s a big pain in the butt. We have a three month old pitbull, that rolls around in the water when she’s done. Help!!!!! Should I use a smaller bowl?
Labs typically love water! I don’t think the size bowl would make that much difference. She just enjoys it! Maybe you could put some kind of mat under the bowl, or even just a towel? On the good news side, Luke rarely does this now that he’s gotten older. So don’t give up hope! 🙂
That is too funny! Ash puts her face in the pool like that but she doesn’t do it when she is drinking out of the water bowl. Luke is such a cutie!
Thanks, that cuteness gets him a long way! LOL
The girls also put their faces in the pool to retrieve the ball, but I’ve never seen them do it in the house!
I don’t think I have ever seen a dog drink like that. As puppies our dogs have sometimes splashed around in the bowl with their paws, but never stuck their heads in…lol.
It really makes me think he’s going to be quite the water dog….dock diving here we come! 🙂
Funny boy, Glory will just take big gulps and hold it in her mouth and spread it all over. I think your tile looks like mine. Very pretty!
Thanks! We are so lucky to have tile there, it might be one of the smartest things we did! I’ll have to try to notice yours in future photos.
That’s so funny. There was just a dog at the shelter today that would stick her whole head in the water bowl (it’s a big bucket when we take them out in the field) to get a drink. Rita doesn’t stick her face in, but she’s still a messy drinker. It’s been a shock after our first 2 girls who were the daintiest drinkers ever! Rita slobs water all over the floor! Oy!
That’s great that you’re doing the MAF virtual walk! I just did a donation to them the other day since they were having a matching gift thing from Blue Buffalo. Such a great organization!
Yes, I love MAF too, they are doing such great work!
I seem to remember Moses was our first really sloppy drinker, and he also used to dump the water dish when he was a puppy. But I think he did mostly outgrow both things, except for some occasional sloppiness. So we’ll hope for the same for Luke! 🙂
That’s a riot. I remember my first pup, Christie, putting her nose into the water to sniff fish. But she didn’t drink that way.
Honey just laps up water with her tongue. But she moves away from the bowl and drips all over the floor, my lap, anything standing by.
I can’t wait to read about Luke’s first swimming trip. Hope he loves it.
We’ve gotten pretty wet from Luke sharing too, I think that’s why my hubby keeps telling him to swallow! 🙂
We took Luke yesterday for a quick swim at the river, just to get his feet wet, so to speak. It went well and we’ll be doing a longer time tomorrow….can’t wait!
At least his nose gets clean! I used to worry that Huxley didn’t actually get enough water when he’d drink- we tried elevated bowl and fountains- because he’d spend so much time at the water bowl everyday and leave such massive puddle trails in every direction from it!
I know, I sometimes wonder how much water he is actually drinking! But he spends enough time at the water dish, and he does sometimes drink normally, so I do think he’s getting plenty. We have to refill the water dish quite often though!
Jack is like Luke, sloppy and noisy. He’s made a mess of my hardwood floors. Good luck on the walk.
Thanks! Yes, it’s a good thing we have tile floors where the water is….though as you can see he spills over onto the hardwood too. I’m just glad we don’t have carpet!
After a walk Melvin likes to wash his feet in his water bowl. Then he will bark for me (his personal servant) to change the dirty water.
If I put peas on his food he will pick them out (one at a time) and deposit them in his water bowl. Then he will bark for me (his personal servant) to change the dirty water.
I now clean his feet after each walk. And no more peas. Tired of being on call.
LOL….Melvin sounds like quite a character, and I think he has you trained quite well! Don’t worry, we’re pretty well trained by our dogs (& cats) too! I especially love that Melvin cleans his feet in the water bowl! Our dogs don’t seem to be very picky about how clean their water is though (or their feet….lol). Cricket likes to put her paws in the water bowls outside to cool off if we haven’t filled the swimming pool. Don’t worry…we get the hint, and we fill the pool. 🙂
Bailie and I always make a mess with water bowls because of our ears falling in the bowl. Katie makes a mess as she pushes the water to the bowl edge with her tongue. I have no problem putting my nose underwater to get at something but I am not drinking when I do it.
Cricket’s ears are long too, but not quite as long as yours, so she doesn’t really make a mess. The girls will stick their noses in the water like you too, but usually only to get a ball.
I can’t believe how he sticks his nose under the water. That is hilarious! Bentley is an extremely messy drinker leaving puddles and trails across the kitchen floor. Tucker, our Golden was also very messy but he’d come wipe his mouth on us after eating or drinking! Every. Single. Time. Funny, how I miss that.
Oh yes, Luke does also like to come and drip on us if we’re nearby, and I remember our Golden Moses doing the same thing. It must be more of a boy thing, right?
It is funny how you can miss their bad habits just as much as their good ones.
Mr. N is a pretty dainty drinker. I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned up after him when he drinks water.
Good for Mr. N! It’s much nicer to have a dry water dish area for sure!
I like to leave a drippy mess around my bowl after a good, long drink! It just all falls out the sides of my mouth. But I only stick my nose in and blow bubbles when I’m bobbing for fruit or ice. Gotta eat everything!
I think Luke was originally bobbing for grass or a stray piece of food in the water dish, when he figured out he could put his nose in. Now he just thinks it’s fun!
I’ve never seen a dog do that! I’d probably put a bath mat under my dog’s water dish.
I was just considering something like that yesterday, only I was thinking a towel. A bath mat might make more sense!
Bailey’s a pretty dainty drinker, but Katy you can hear from any part of the house when she’s drinking.
I guess they all have their different ways of doing it! Our two girls are pretty quiet, so we pretty much know who’s at the bowl when we hear all the noise too!
We had a Beagle pup once who flooded the area, but my current dogs are quite dainty drinkers. There is never a drop on the floor.
Lucky you! Our girls are both dainty drinkers….no slobbing it around for them anyway. Luke does more than enough for everyone!
OMD! Koda is SUCH a sloppy drinker!!!!! He always leaves a huge mess! And I have to take the water dish away from him, or he would never stop drinking, and then pees all over the place! So we have had to regulate his water intake. He is just a year old, so maybe it is the age of them? Not to sure, but I hope he outgrows it, and hopefully Luke does too!
Headed over to check out that post!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Yes, let’s hope they do outgrow it! I’m not sure how much water Luke actually drinks since so much of it ends up on the floor! LOL
Thanks for reading and commenting on the CatsnToys post!
Well, I surely do not stick my whole nose into the water to get a drink…however, I am terrierific at leaving a trail of water dribble across the kitchen floor after a good slug of water. BOL Happy Monday!
Oz
There’s no reason to put your nose in there, right, Oz? But apparently you can still make a mess anyway! 🙂 Have a great week!
