It was about a year ago when I first tried CBD/hemp treats and CBD oil for dogs. These products were beginning to gain popularity at that point, and I was starting to hear good reports of benefits to dogs’ joints, anxieties, and even reductions in seizures and help with cancer. I decided to try it with Luke, and while at first we didn’t, later we had some success. It seemed to help Luke’s seasonal allergies and calm him down just a bit.
At the same time, our beagle Cricket’s heart issues had started (“When Bad News Can Seem Almost Good”), our cat Sam had a lot of health issues, and I felt like we were spending a lot of time at – and money on – the vet. On top of that, my hubby and I were both facing unemployment. Financially, we had to start being more careful, and since I wasn’t seeing fantastic results with Luke on the CBD, I made the decision not to use it anymore at that time (while hemp oil for dogs is a lot of good things, inexpensive is not one of them).
A lot has changed for us since then. Sadly, Cricket is gone, but on the brighter side, Sam’s health seems to have settled down and hubby and I are both back to work. We went through a lot of changes to get to this point, however, and while on the surface Luke seemed to be rolling with it, I started to see subtle signs that the stress might be bothering him.

It was fortuitous that I got offered the chance to try a different hemp oil product, HempMy Pet, at the same time all that was going on. Luke was spending a lot of time going down to our closet, which is his safe place when things like loud noises are bothering him. I’m glad he has a safe place, instead of reacting like many dogs pacing and whining (he does that occasionally too but not as much). That has been the one good thing about Luke’s fears, he mostly handles them well. But it still makes me sad that he’s down there alone instead of being with us. The worst part was that he was doing this when there was nothing obvious scaring him; and I was starting to worry a bit. He was choosing the closet over hanging out with us at various times, and that was what really bothered me.
It’s a jungle out there with CBD/hemp oil products becoming all the rage, and many companies getting on the bandwagon. HempMy Pet was very attractive to me because their values obviously aligned with my own, and that’s important to me. They were founded in 2015 and are headquartered in Longmont, CO. They are the first vertically integrated hemp oil production company and only use strictly organic farming methods, thereby creating only high quality human grade formulations for pets. Since we have our own little organic farm here, you can see how attractive that is to me.
Their products, which include tinctures, oils, and organic pet treats, never include ingredients sourced from China. Here are some of the other highlights for me:
- They use organic, human-grade, all-natural ingredients in all their products.
- The carrier oils they use (such as coconut oil) are certified organic and sourced fresh.
- All ingredients are GMO and pesticide free. They are 3rd party tested for purity, potency, and safety. They use full-spectrum hemp extract, which is strain-specific for consistency.
- The hemp oil contains CBD, CBG, CBC, CBD-V and other beneficial cannabinoids. It also contains a broad spectrum of terpenoids (beneficial plant chemicals).
Enough about the science! Let’s get to the bottom line here. How is HempMy Pet benefitting Luke?
It is my goal to have Luke live the most natural life possible. We already learned that even strong medications are no match for his fear and anxiety, and I don’t ever want to put him through taking those drugs again. We are looking for as many natural solutions as we can find to help him stay healthy and happy.
We received the products seen in the photo below, and I have been alternating between them. We started out with about half the recommended dosages to be sure it all settled OK with him and it did. We saw almost immediate results, which surprised me. It surprised both my hubby and I so much we thought it might just be a coincidence.
Times Luke had been going down to his closet, he was now staying out with us. The first day he stayed lying in the living room chair napping even while I was upstairs (which is on the same end of the house as our bedroom and his closet) tending to the chicks. On the 2nd day he was napping with Dad on the couch. One evening he was especially fidgety, barking at the TV, whining at me to play, and just generally being restless at a time he was usually settled down. I gave him one of the biscuits and next thing we knew, he was lying down with Dad.

These may seem like small things, but for us they were big improvements. Now he gets a full dose of either the coconut oil (he LOVES coconut oil), or the tincture (which is just a bit easier to measure and serve out) with his breakfast, and then a cookie at lunch time.
More and more he is spending less time in the closet, and more and more I see him relaxing, even outside, on his own. In the past, he’s inside if we’re inside, and he only went outside to do his business, chase creatures, or to bark at people walking past. Now he’s seen lounging on the deck, patio, or in the grass at various times. It used to be when I was baking my own organic dog biscuits to sell locally for the farm, he’d often go to the closet. He didn’t like the various beeps from the oven and the timer. Now I often look to see him outside in the sunshine. It makes me happy to see him so relaxed.

I’m not going to tell you that Hemp supplements are working miracles with Luke. He still barks at strangers, sometimes at the TV, and he still goes down to his closet at times. But I’m not worried about him like I was. There are some things with him that are never going to change easily. We did see one major thing though. One day there was a loud boom outside our house. It seemed very close and I immediately looked to Luke, worried that he was going to freak out completely. He did go down to his closet, and once I made sure the noise was nothing to worry about, I went down to check on him, treat in hand to hope to lure him out. He met me in the bedroom, took the treat, and followed me back out to the dining room. That IS major, because loud noises like that would normally send him to his closet for some time.
The other morning there was a thunderstorm. We were still in bed, and again, I expected him to leave immediately. He picked his head up, listened, and put it back down. That happened more than once, and when the rain finally came down loudly, he did go to the closet. But he didn’t go immediately, and that to me was telling. It was the progress I’d hoped for.
I hope to see other benefits in time as well. I have blog friends who have seen great results with these types of products for their pets with arthritis. Luke has luxating patellas in his back knees. I am told that either with or without surgery, he is looking at arthritis down the road. Right now, we are happy to just see his knees not popping out. He’s on a joint supplement, and his knees don’t normally bother him as much in the summer as the winter; so I’m withholding judgement at this point. I am, however, considering dropping his joint supplement at some point and seeing if the hemp oil can do the trick. I’ll also be watching to see if his seasonal allergies bother him again this late summer/early fall. CBD helped with that in the past and I’m hoping if I keep him on the HempMy Pet (which I plan to), we might hold those off.
For now, I’m very pleased that Luke is happier and more relaxed at times and this product will be a keeper for us. If you are considering adding a CBD/Hemp product to your dog’s diet, I highly recommend HempMy Pet. I feel comfortable that they have created a quality product that is safe and effective for Luke and could benefit your pets as well. You can see all their products by clicking here.

Have you tried hemp or CBD products? Have they benefited your pet? If not, would you consider trying it to help with anxiety, cancer, seizures, or arthritis – all conditions pet families have reported benefits with?

I’ve been looking for more stories from people who have tried CBD oil or similar products and the effects they’ve seen so I was happy to find this post and such open and honest comments.
It’s awesome to hear it’s been working out, I’m still considering using some with my Lab, I’m not sure what’s keeping me on the fence about it, sounds like there are only positives to be honest. Beautiful dog and pics too by the way!
Wow, I’ve never heard of this product before. Before reading this article, I had no idea anything like this would be available for pets. Very cool, thanks for sharing this information!
I am glad that works well for you and your beautiful dog. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I’m so pleased to hear this! As you know, we’ve had Sampson on CBD oil since Myrtle Beach. The product I was using was so cost prohibitive that I recently switched to him to the whole Hemp complex. It is the supplement I take myself, and I just get an extra bottle to use for him.
I am going to check out these products though.
I am glad to hear you are taking it too. I’ve been thinking about it, so it’s good to know someone that does.
We are firm believers in the benefits of CBD oils and treats. That is why we became affiliate marketers for the brand we use. It is important to spread the word of how this all-natural product can do so much for our pets.
I agree! I wish so much I had known more when Sheba had her cancer. I really think this could have helped. So many people still don’t know about it, because so many vets don’t look beyond traditional medications.
That is great!! I still want to try them on Matt but have not purchased any yet.
xoxo,
Bell Fur Zoo Mama
I really hope it can help Matt too. Let us know if you try it!
Thanks for the review! We haven’t tried it yet. We were waiting for studies to confirm that CBD does not increase seizure activity (some vets thought that it might). That has been confirmed but I’ve still felt some worry about adding it to Shyla’s system due to her epilepsy which is presently under control. I know that sounds crazy but I’m a little paranoid about seizures. I’d like to give it to her to see if it could reduce her fears.
I completely understand your paranoia. I am so cautious about adding anything new to the crew’s regimens, especially if what I’m currently doing seems to be working. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
However, are you familiar with Monika from Tails Around the Ranch? She has had some success using CBD oil for one of her dog’s seizures. (see her comment below) It could have multiple benefits for Shyla.
Glad to hear these products are working well for Luke.
Thank you, JoAnn!
We’re glad these products are helping Luke, at least a little. There’s so many hemp type products out there for pets, it’s hard to know which ones are best.
It’s so true. It’s my understanding that there are some suppliers who use deceptive practices, such as importing hemp seed oil from China to Canada and then labeling it as “Canadian”. That’s one thing I like so much about this company – knowing they don’t do that. You really have to do your homework, that’s for sure!
Jakey is doing well on most things with his CBD treats, I have found it des a great job for car rides especially. Nt so much for his separation anxiety tho…I am hoping time will help.
I am so glad it’s helping Jakey with some things. I think for their worst anxieties – with Luke it’s strangers – it’s always going to take a little more – maybe even a lot more, or a combination of things, and a lot of time and patience.
I am glad you found something to help relax Luke.
Thank you, Ellen! Reducing Luke’s stress helps to reduce ours as well! 🙂
So glad the HempMyPet is working for Luke! I remember you weren’t all that impressed with the Treatibles oils and treats. I may check out the HMP for Ducky. Shadow was doing great with the Treatibles but now that she’s doing so much better after the stem cell infusion, I’ve cut back her CBD gel caps by half. I had tried the oil for Ducky but it didn’t seem to effect her at all.
I really, really wish I’d been more aware about these products when Sheba had her cancer. We were lucky she did as well as she did, but still….a little more would have been better too.
I am a big fan of CBD oil and have seen first hand its efficacy with both Sam and Elsa. Sam loves the idea of going on a ride, but as soon as the key is turned, he tends to freak out. A few drops of CBD and he lies down totally relaxed. CBD oil has allowed me to reduce Elsa’s anti-seizure meds by 25% so I’m thrilled to use a natural product rather than a chemical to remediate the epilepsy. I recently toured a certified naturally grown hemp farm near Denver and will be carrying their line of CBD oils for sale. Like you, I love how this products works on pets but discovered the cost somewhat prohibitive as a long term solution. Black Dog Botanicals has been the best value I found and because it’s certified naturally grown, I couldn’t be happier with the supplier or the product. Very glad to hear Luke is experiencing some relief from fear and anxiety and that things are starting to improve for you and your family in general. 💜
Thank you!! Your success stories with both Elsa and Sam is one of the things that encouraged me to try these products again. How exciting that you got to tour a farm! That must have been fun!
Those little changes are big wins for you and for Luke!
They sure are!! ♥
I put Roxy on CBD oil several months ago. It’s helped her pain level so much, I was able to take her off the daily rimadyl. I’m a fan for pets, and people.
That is SO great!! Now you don’t have to worry about those side effects that go along with Rimadyl, that’s what I love about natural products.
Honestly, I’m considering trying it myself for stress. My hope is that reducing my reactions to stress could ultimately help reduce my migraine headaches. I refuse to take the medications they’ve recommended for migraines (other than an OTC pain reliever when really needed), because the side effects are often worse than the migraine!
I’m so glad this is helping Luke! I actually just saw an article about how CBD oil was helping people living in big cities deal with the anxiety that comes with those environments, too! Keep us posted on how this works with his joint issues going forward–we tried a couple different joint supplements and they had bad effects on Barley, so we had to cut them out and now that she’s almost 9, I’m definitely in the market for something new to keep her joints healthy.
This is definitely the time you want to get Barley on something for her joints. I will keep you posted.
I think it’s so great that these products are helping humans as well!
We are impressed with the CBD oil we are using with Bailie. Glad your products are helping out Luke. Thankfully, Bailie is only fearful with a couple things, not every day life.
I’m so glad that the CBD oil is helping Bailie as well!
we need that magic potion… said the mama… I bet she wants it fur herself ;o) but it makes really sense , we will look if ole europe has something like this product…thanks for sahring your experiences with Luke, glad it worked for him ;O)
Since all the ingredients are human-grade, it is safe for your Mom too! 🙂
