Since we were stuck inside this weekend due to below zero wind chills, plus being Valentine’s weekend, I thought it would be a good time to bake something special for the dogs!
Since doing a little research on Sheba’s cancer, it came to my attention that there are special diets for dogs with cancer. As far as we know, Sheba’s cancer is all removed and not active, but it’s something I was interested in anyway, just in case. It turns out low carbohydrate, high protein is the recommendation. The dogs are already on a grain free kibble, but they do get treats with grains. When I saw a recipe on Facebook for some grain free treats, I thought why not give them a try?
I didn’t have the coconut flour the recipe called for, so ended up substituting brown rice flour, taking away the grain free aspect! But it does turn out that brown rice flour has a lower glucose content, so it’s still better than other flours.
My kitchen helpers aren’t interested in helping, they just want to go outside into the frigid cold!
This recipe was simple, which I always prefer! Here are the ingredients that I used:
- 1 1/2 cups organic brown rice flour ( the original recipe called for 1 cup of coconut flour – I found the batter too runny so had to add more flour)
- 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
- 1/2 cup mashed blueberries
- 1/2 cup mashed bananas (1 medium size banana gave me about the right amount)
- 4 eggs
- 1/3 cup warm water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. The original recipe says to add more water if it’s too dry, but I had to add more flour to thicken it. It also says to roll out the dough to cut out shapes, but honestly, I couldn’t get it thick enough to do that, so ended up just doing dropped spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. It’s easier anyway, and the dogs don’t care what shape they are! Bake in the oven for 22 minutes.
These made pretty good size cookies (human size), and these are high in calories. I got 30 cookies, and by my calculations they could have approximately 60 calories per cookie. Yikes! Luckily, they are soft so easy to break into pieces. I also froze half the batch so they will be saved for special treats. I bet if you’re creative you could find a way to cut the calories though….I may try that in the future.
NOW they want to help! You can smell the peanut butter when they’re cooking. The dogs went nuts for these (excuse the pun there)….even Sheba got grabby when waiting for her piece, and she almost never does that!

I want to give credit where it’s due, and if you’d like to find the original recipe, you can find that on K9 Instinct.com by clicking here, along with lots of other great recipes and information.
Quick update on Sheba: She couldn’t get all the stitches out yesterday because she’s still getting some fluid in there. But it’s coming along, and the vet thought everything looked good. She had one small separate area of stitches and she was able to get those out. Her weight was perfect, right where it always is, so I’m happy about that (I thought she looked skinny but I guess that’s just because of her shaved fur!).

A fun day baking, those look so yummy.
It’s a great activity for those “below zero wind chill” days, which we’ve been having way too many of lately!
I wonder if a different nut butter would reduce the calories?
Personally I like this because I would probably eat it too. LOL
That’s a good idea, I’ll have to look into that.
Well, I tried a bite of one of these, and they were kind of dry. Maybe dipped in milk or coffee though? 🙂
These sound delicious! I even have some coconut flour in the freezer! BUT, Ducky can’t have any treats yet. She has about another 6 weeks to go before the vet said I can start giving her treats again. And I won’t give her sisters treats that I can’t give her. Maybe by next year I’ll be able to give these to her.
Poor Ducky, but hopefully soon. I always believe in treating the dogs equally too. When one has to go for surgery, no one gets breakfast that morning….I come back and feed the others after the unlucky one gets delivered to the vet’s.
I’m on the hunt for coconut flour, but just not going out much these days in the frigid weather!
Thanks for the update on Sheba. I’m glad the vet thinks everything looks ok!
Those cookies look DELISH!!!! My huskies would love to get their paws on those!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Thank you for thinking of Sheba!
Hopefully you get a chance to try these cookies, I know your huskies would love them.
Those look human good! I’m sure mine would LOVE these!
I bet they would! I actually tried one though, and they were kind of dry. 🙂
They look yummy and very nice as a drop cookie.
Thanks….maybe next time we’ll get a little fancier. 🙂
Dogs get the best treats!
Yes, our kitty Sam thought so too, because she kept trying to steal one off that plate! 🙂
I love how there are only so few ingredients. So easy to make! Will have to try these sometime! Thanks for sharing – Petnet(io)
One of my #1 priorities for a recipe is very few ingredients! It’s hard to find time for baking, so the simpler the better too.
Anything with blueberries AND peanut butter is gonna get our attention! Yummy stuff!
I wouldn’t think of those two things as going together for us humans, but it definitely works for the dogs!
PAWsome recipe … because of the BANANAs. ENJOY! Golden Woofs
Anything with bananas is definitely good!
Thanks for keeping us updated on Sheba’s progress. She is waiting so patiently for her yummies! These look delicious! We are going to pin these for later!
I know your guys will love these as well!
Mmmmh, your cookies DO look delicious ~ doesn’t it feel great to wear our baking hats for our pups every now & then? I don’t do it on a regular basis, but the hat comes out a few times per year 😉
It does feel great. I’d like to do it more often. They appreciate my baking more than my hubby does I think (I always end up eating most of it when I bake for us!).
LOL! Mom had to re read the post when she saw the cookie photo as she thought it was about dog cookies, but looked like human cookies. They sound tasty!
LOL….I should leave that plate out on the counter when company comes over and see if anyone tries one!
Glad to hear that Sheba is coming along, and how great that you are researching what to feed her. Love Dolly
Thank you, Dolly! The healing process seems slow, but I think we’re getting there.
They look yummy
The dogs sure thought so!
You didn’t say it but sounds like every ingredient is human grade. 🙂 did you try one? They look great!
Yes, all human grade! I wish I could say all organic too, but the fruit wasn’t….eggs, flour, and peanut butter are though. Tom said they looked good enough to eat, but with no sugar I thought they’d be kind of bland for us humans. 🙂
what? no one was interested to help you? I come over and help with all 4 paws :o) I’m a good helper, sometimes even my mom is puzzled and says: I can’t believe you really did that….:o)
Well, I’ll have to give you a shout next time, Easy! Luke probably would have liked to help, but since we’re training him to stay out of the kitchen when I’m cooking, we couldn’t really let him. 🙂
