We have three active dogs – two aging seniors and one young adult. Bringing Luke into our household brought a new energy to his older siblings. Cricket recently turned 11 and Sheba will be there in just a few days. When Sheba and Luke get playing, whether it’s tug-o-war or just arguing over a toy…you’d be hard pressed to guess which one is almost 11 and which one almost 2.
We do everything we can to keep all three dogs healthy; that includes lots of fresh air and exercise, supplements, and a grain free, limited ingredient diet. We had been on the lookout for a new food for them recently. We were pleased to be selected to try Pinnacle Pet Food®. The idea that it was holistic and made from quality ingredients right in California appealed to me. They started in 1998 as the breakthrough company in holistic foods and just this last May they took all their dog recipes to grain free.

We chose Sheba to be the one to make the switch and be our “spokesdog” for this new food. However, once I learned more about it, and we received our Trout & Sweet Potato food, I decided all 3 dogs could give it a try. They are all fish lovers so they were excited.

Of course we did the changeover slowly, following the recommended 25% new food mixed with old for 3 days, then 50% for 3 days, and 75% for three days. I noticed some softer stools during the changeover, but nothing major and by the time we were at 100% everyone was doing fine. The dogs find it tasty and I know that it is easy on Luke’s sensitive stomach.
During this time we were doing extra walks for Walk Your Dog Week, along with our usual daily play time in the yard. I noticed Sheba especially being full of energy. I think part of it was due to the cooler fall weather, but to keep a senior dog like her acting like a puppy, you need all the factors in place.

Not only does she seem more energetic, but her coat seems especially soft, and her ears are less gunky than usual. She has been chasing the ball more, and often chasing her brother as well. I had just commented to my hubby last week that she had been running a lot on one particular day. She was actually just a bit gimpy that night, but by the next day she was fine. Neither she nor Cricket seem to act their age much of the time, but if they overdo it a bit, they feel it in their arthritic joints. As long as they recover quickly, we like to let them do what they want, within reason.

Knowing this food provides total nutrition for holistic health makes me feel good about feeding it to them. If you are an ingredient conscious pet parent like I am, I think you’ll find these things about Pinnacle Pet Food appealing as well:
- They have natural, healthy recipes that use high quality proteins like trout, turkey, and salmon.
- Other holistic ingredients include sweet potato, pumpkin, quinoa, flax seed, blueberries, kelp, and cottage cheese.
- Antioxidants are included to support a healthy immune system – this is especially important for seniors and cancer survivors like our Sheba.
- Plenty of fiber to encourage healthy digestion and small stools.
- This food promotes general joint health and overall muscle tone, both of which are very important for active dogs.
- This grain free food is also less expensive than what we had been feeding previously, and even though that’s not the most important thing about a food to me, we try to get the best quality food we can while not breaking the bank. When you have multiple pets that can be an important factor.
But the most important thing to me is that everyone is feeling good and they are healthy and happy.

That looks like a good food, but is it expensive?
Right now it is running from $49-59 on chewy.com for a 24 lb bag (depending on flavor). For us, it’s less expensive than what were feeding previously.
looks like the gang just loves it.
All your pics are always great, but I do so love that last one of the 3 of them together-they look like they are taking a walk together, and in sync pretty much!! Although in reality, Cricket is probably trying to get that ball out of Sheba’s mouth I think I see?? This food sounds great!
Thanks, Lynn! Yup, I think Cricket was just waiting for Sheba to drop it!
Great review – looks like Luke was quite interested in trying out the new food!
No sense in waiting for it to be put in a bowl, right? Just go right to the source! 🙂
I noticed that too about the ears. One of my dogs has chronic smelly ears but the vet said there wasn’t an infection. Being on the Pinnacle for a month, and the smell and hunk are gone!
That was something I did not expect, and I’m so pleased about it!
The Pinnacle food looked to be a big hit with your crew. We know it comes in cat food…we’ll hafta look for it.
I think we might try the dry cat food for Sam too. She doesn’t seem to be as fussy when it comes to dry food as she is about canned. But we’ll just buy a small bag to start…just in case. Then maybe we’ll try the canned 🙂
The head in the bag–killing me! Love, love love!
Thank you, we’re so glad you enjoyed it!!! 🙂
The food we put into our pups is so important!! With Cocoa and all her tummy issues I am always looking to learn as much as I can about food and treats that are good for them!!
I totally agree! It’s one of the reasons I’m grateful I became a blogger. I have learned so much about food and nutrition that I probably never would have without the blog!
Luke had some tummy issues when he was a younger, and I’m pretty sure it’s when we switched them to grain free food that they finally got better.
Our friends love that stuff
Lily & Edward
Having good health is so important and if you lose it, you can’t buy it back. Sounds like the food is working great for you.
I’m always on the hunt for good quality/grain free food. One never knows when one might need it.
I’m glad to hear that Sheba is doing so well on it, nothing makes me happier than to see my dogs happy.
Were you nervous about letting Luke stick his head in that bag? I know I would have been if it had been Delilah. LOL
I was a little nervous about it, but even when food is involved, he usually listens pretty well. Plus he doesn’t tend to woof food down. I would have been more nervous about letting Cricket do it….she’s a speed eater. You should see the little hoover go when we accidentally drop a dish of cat food. LOL
I have enjoyed learning more about this food, thanks! Sheba always looks so happy and full of life in her photos!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
it’s so great that you found a food what fits perfectly for your pups. I like the mix of sweet potato and trout, I’m sure Easy would like it too, he is a parttime-cat :o)
I think this crew is part cat as well. I thought it was only cats that came running when you open a can of tuna fish, but around here it’s the cat AND all the dogs!
I have not tried Pinnacle but it certainly sounds terrific. Great review. ☺
