Luke turned 8 months old last Friday! He still seems to be growing, though much more slowly lately. I have tried to find out through research how long dogs really grow for, but I couldn’t find any clear answers. Up to a year at least is what I determined. Almost a month ago when he went to the vet he was up to 58 pounds, but we haven’t weighed him since. Just yesterday I realized he has gotten as tall as Sheba!
His head isn’t quite as tall, but his back is. You can tell that he has longer legs than she does. Sheba weighs 67 pounds, so we’re going to take Luke by the vet’s office soon and weigh him to compare. You can see in the photo below that he’s not quite as long as she is either.
It’s so much fun to watch him grow and wonder where he will end up. Maybe I should have a contest to guess what his weight will be at one year old! What do you think, would that be fun? 🙂

Someone once told me that it takes as long as it takes for a dog to finish growing and the bigger the dog, the longer it takes. Now height-wise I would say our dogs were done at about 1 1/2 years, but they continued to mature and thicken. Thunder stopped at 5! This is not uncommon for Chessies.
I still wonder about Luke’s DNA results. I still see pointer or maybe treeing walker in him. Especially the way he stands. Maybe that is from his unknown side?
I guess it’s difficult without knowing Luke’s exact breeds to even guess when he might stop growing! Except that it seems he’ll be large, so I imagine he’ll be growing for a while.
We wonder about Luke’s DNA results as well, and really did think about doing it again but just didn’t want to spend the money. We definitely feel like he has some type of hound dog in him, he has the nose. I’ve also seen pointers and he reminds me so much of them. His legs are also so long, and I don’t think that’s typical of Labs, is it? I guess his unknown side could have just about anything!
Field labs can have long legs but the way he stands doesn’t look lab to me. He is still a pup so he could grow into his legs. I think his coloring of the white with black spots and his head shape just seem hound to me. I guess it doesn’t really matter…lol. I don’t blame you for not getting the test done again. They may have a better test someday and then it may be worth repeating if you are still curious.
Yes, we’ll keep our ears open for the day when something better is available.
love the idea! Go for it!
Thanks, Caren! I think I’ll have to come up with a plan!
They grow up so quickly. Love the photos! Gigi tends to crowd us like crazy if she thinks we have food or treats in our hands haha.
They sure do! I don’t know how people use treats to try to get photos, mine are far too impatient to wait while I take a photo! LOL
Oh I think it would be great fun to have a guess the weight contest. I would think you’d have to cap it, like choose a date (maybe right around the one year mark) and let people guess from there. I’m already calculating in my mind…:-)
Yes, I was thinking around the one year mark would be good too. I just have to figure out how far ahead of that to do it. I need to do the math myself, and try to come up with my own guess (just for fun)!
Oh my that looks like my house, Mom MUST have treats, lol everyone comes running!
You are totally correct on that….did you notice the cat comes running too? 🙂
and there’s that kitty Conrad, getting in on 2 of the 3 photos!!!
He’s our PRO-fessional photo bomber, especially when treats come out!
Wow 8 months already where does the time go? he looks great.
Thanks…..I know….I can’t believe he’s already that old. The little puppy is gone already!
Luke is getting so big! It’s so much fun watching them grow up into adult doggies!
It’s been so long since we had a puppy, I had forgotten how much fun it is to watch them grow!
Luke is really getting big!
He certainly is!
It’s been fun for us to watch him grow too…he’s gotten so big. I bet he just fills out a little more, I bet he doesn’t get much taller.
Thanks! I think you are probably right, especially since his legs are so long already!
He looks great.
Thanks!
We just weigh Mr. N on our scale but he fits on ours! I picked him up yesterday and said to the boyfriend that he felt lighter. The scale proved me right.
My hubby was weighing Luke on our scale up until he was about 50 lbs, but we couldn’t do it anymore after that (he was picking him up).
I like that about small dogs and cats, you can usually judge just by picking them up!
He looks like he will be a pretty big dog. Maybe a little bigger than Sheba is what I’d guess, but who knows! I think a contest could be fun 🙂
Thanks, Ann, I’m going to have to think about when and how to do a contest, but I would like to.
I think you are right that he will end up a little bigger than Sheba.
Wow! Seeing Luke beside Sheba like that really shows how much he has grown! He is lookin good! Handsome pup!
Koda turned one year in April and has continued to grow. Not much, and mostly just filling out, but he has grown some since his bday.
I think your contest would be fun!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Thanks, Jenna! Good to know about Koda, that gives me an idea to go by. Luke was just growing so fast for so long, but now he is growing much more slowly.
I’ll have to think about the contest, and come up with a plan!
I grew after 2, but I was tarred as a baby. Keep growing! Woooowoooooooooo!
His Dad is sure hoping he will continue to grow, but Mom would be OK if he stopped anytime!
My little dogs didn’t grow much past 9 or 10 months. I guess it depends on the breed mostly.
Probably so. Hard to know when he’s a mutt, so we mostly have to judge by the only breed we’re sure of in him, which is Lab. We expected him to be big, but his growth has really slowed down lately.
Looking good! I see happy wagging tails 🙂 Happy BlogPaws WW. Golden Woofs
That they are…we had to get the treats out to get them to stand next to each other! 🙂 Happy WW to you too!
What a beautiful pack!! Happy WW!!
Thank you! Happy WW to you too!
He has changed so much! Most dogs finish with height and length for the most part by the age of one, but until they are 3, they slowly fill out, larger breeds heads grow a bit more, so I bet he will put on another 10 or more pounds. Bailie was 33 lbs at a year and she should be close to 40 at full size. She still has that skinny girl, teenage body. I’m not an expert, but from the breeds we have that has been the case.
Thanks for the great info, Emma. It’s been so long since we had a puppy I couldn’t remember anything. I’ve often said his head is small for his body, so it would make sense if they grew more at some point! He’ll probably end up about the size our golden Moses was then, Moses was a bit bigger than Sheba. Luke has already filled out some though, he doesn’t have that skinny body that he had when he was younger….but he’s pretty solid!
