National Mutt Day was started in 2005 to raise awareness of mixed breed dogs in shelters. Two days per year we celebrate mutts and try to educate the public about all of the mixed breed dogs in shelters needing homes.
What is so special about mutts? Our first two dogs and our most recent addition to our household have all been mutts. It’s fun to have dogs who are a bit of a mystery starting out….how big will they be and what will their personality be like? We can try to find out more about them by having DNA tests done, but in the end, we’re not quite sure what we’ll end up with. We ended up with very loving dogs with wonderful personalities and traits. It is sometimes said that mutts can have less health issues than mixed breed dogs. Since we lost Shelby at only age 6 to cancer, I can’t really say whether that is true or not, but it makes sense that they would be less prone to genetic diseases and conditions that purebreds can suffer from. Mutts are usually less expensive as well and there are plenty to choose from!

In honor of National Mutt Day we are sharing a mixed breed dog that is with a local rescue. Coco is listed as a Corgi/Labrador retriever mix. She is a young female who enjoys playing with toys and going for walks. She is shy but will warm up to you, and will probably want to sleep in your bed!

Happy mutt day! (ok I am late…lol) I think it has been disproved that mutts are less prone to genetic health issues. If the parents have the bad genes, the pups may inherit them. Purebred dogs seem to be more prone because their breeders screen for genetic disorders and report them.
I definitely have to agree with you, especially now taking into consideration Luke’s luxating patella diagnosis. That is an inherited disease. Perhaps you could say if a dog is, say 1/2 golden, and 1/2 Lab, that they have only a 50% chance of a health issue that each breed has, but they still have a chance for any health issue that either breed has. (hope that made sense)
awe happy national mutt day. Mutts are so cool.
They sure are!
Coco is beautiful, and I absolutely love this quote! I think it is great that they have a day just for mutts, that’s all I had growing up as a child xx
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
It seems like there was a time that that’s all anyone had was mutts! It is a very beautiful quote.
Coco is precious! We think mutts are awesome and everyone ought to have one! Sharing Coco and keeping fingers crossed that she finds a home real soon!
Thank you for sharing Coco…fingers crossed for her! Mutts definitely are awesome!
We <3 mutts – Riley is a Pekingese/Poodle mix (if not even more breeds!) – and Coco sure is a cute one! Sharing her!
I love that they can just be a combination of so many different breeds, and you never know what one they’ll act like next.
Happy National Mutt Day!
Our cats are mutts too! 🙂
Darn, I missed this day today. I always like to honor our Tino today…
I almost missed it myself. Luckily I saw some article the day before….I had missed the spring one and Luke wasn’t happy with me. 🙂
I loved mixed breed dogs very mutts. 🙂
Happy Mutt Day!
Don’t we all! 🙂
What a lovely face! Will share with friends in NH!
Thank you for sharing!!
Wow. Coco looks so much like my late Tucker that I thought he’d come back from the rainbow bridge! What a cutie! sharing and hoping she’ll have a loving home for the holidays.
Are you sure you don’t want her? 🙂 I wonder sometimes if I could ever get a dog that looked so much like a previous one….I guess it could be good and bad?
Coco is adorable! Mom is definitely pro-mutt, she is just now learning about how much more money a purebred dog costs you! Love Dolly
Purebreds can certainly have their more expensive issues, not to mention more expensive to get the one you want. I hope Taffy isn’t having too many issues? We were lucky with ours to get them from home breeders so they were a bit less expensive, or like Taffy, our beagle Kobi came from family.
What a great day! We love mutts at our house. Coco sure is adorable in that top photo. Hope she finds a great home for the holidays.
We hope so for Coco too! It is a great day, mutts really make such wonderful pets.
