It’s amazing what a difference a day or two can make in the weather! It’s not technically winter yet, so Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. On Thanksgiving morning, Luke didn’t even need his jacket for our walk. It was above freezing, and the only snow left on the ground from our early November storms was some patches in the woods.
Then, just three days later, this is what our walk looked like:
Apparently there are just as many smells in the snow as in the leaves!
The farm birds are not impressed. They were happy just two days before the holiday when they could find lots of bare ground.
After Thanksgiving, not so much. They were hiding out in the coop, garage, and barn mostly.

They don’t like walking in the snow, though if it’s sunny and a bit warmer they will venture out. I usually shovel them a path from the coop to the garage, and put some straw down on it so the walk will be easier for them. 🙂

By the way, early next week they are predicting rain, and maybe a lot of it! The birds will be happy, but Luke and I just hope we don’t end up with a bunch of ice when the temperatures plunge again, which they are bound to do. It looks like it’s going to be another up and down winter around here, we’ll just have to do our best to go with the flow! Or, do a lot of this:
How has your pre-winter weather been?

We got a lot of quite cold days for Florida in November which we usually don’t get and so far December has been cold (FL version of cold humid and 50-60’s) for 4-5 days then hot for 2 days then cold again. I’m hoping for a cold Christmas at least.
xoxo,
Bell Fur Zoo Mama
Your weather sounds as crazy as ours! Our November was unusually cold too. It was looking good for a white Christmas, but the last rain storm washed it all away (oddly, they have snow south of us). I guess there’s still time for more snow; and I just hope the temperatures stay moderate, and don’t go frigid again!
I think that the birds need slippers to keep their tootsies warm 😉
We are way past “pre-winter” and into the semi-permanently frozen phase. I will be hoping that you can avoid the ice…
They do! I just need to find someone willing to knit 40 pairs of boots….and then get them on them. LOL!
I can’t believe how much snow you have there! Our rain should be followed by snow so hopefully that keeps the ice at bay. Paws crossed.
We have winter a couple of days each week then back in the 70’s. No chance of snow.
We could take that. 🙂
Rainy season has started here, luckily we don’t get cold enough for long term ice…Stay warm!
We’re happy you don’t have to worry about ice, though I’m sure the rain gets old quickly too, especially if it keeps you inside.
I must admit, this yo-yo weather makes life a bit of a challenge for planning walks. Hope things become more settled around the farm so Luke and the chickens aren’t too negatively impacted. Happy weekend.
We kind of have to learn to go with the flow around here. We didn’t get to walk all weekend because it was too cold, but we were at least able to get out there this morning before the rain started!
You are so cute Luke. I am jealous that you can still see leaves- all we see is snow.
You really got buried down there! I imagine you are getting rain now too though, so maybe you’ll be seeing leaves again soon! 🙂
I would curl up by the fire too!
It is THE place to be!!
All of the snow we got a few weeks ago is gone now. But it’s still kinda cold here. But when the sun is shining, it makes everything feel good. 🙂
It seems like whenever the sun shines here, it’s bitterly cold out. It only warms up when it’s cloudy and snowing or raining! The sun really warms up the house too though, which helps.
I love going on walks with you, Luke. I need to dress warmer though. I don’t really have that many snow clothes.
It’s good that you have a great place to sleep after all that work.
Have a woof woof day and weekend, Luke. My best to your mom. ♥
Dressing properly is the only way to enjoy getting out there (so says Mom. All I need is my coat!).
Those really were fun photos to see and we love seeing Luke so happy in front of the fire!
He makes for such a peaceful scene, doesn’t he? 🙂
we guessed that the mama is related with your girls… she likes no walks in the snow either hahaha
Haha, your Mama might like to come hang out with the girls! They do like to go out in the rain though, so she’d best bring her rain coat. LOL
We have snow and some ice too. Thankfully Mom has her icebugs so she is still able to run and walk without being afraid of the ice. Hope your snow stays and the rain doesn’t happen.
I have those YakTrax on my boots, but I still don’t think I’d feel safe running on the ice. Some day I’ll look at those icebugs though.
It’s raining now; but we did get additional snow over the weekend so maybe it won’t all wash away.
Mom is forever telling me that snow doesn’t smell but mom is wrong. There are so many great smells hiding in the snow, aren’t there, Luke!
Our pre-winter has been pretty much the same as yours.
There sure are!! Once we start our tracking class I think we’ll learn more about that too. Well, Mom will learn. We dogs already know!
Love, Luke
