You might remember our post about the herb garden I planted for the chickens. Included in that garden were some sunflowers. I put them in there at the back to enjoy their beauty, and to then later harvest the seedheads for the flock. Sunflower seeds are very good for them, especially at this time when many of them are molting and extra protein helps them to regrow their feathers. While the sunflowers’ growth was slow, eventually they got quite tall and then started to blossom.
Then they got so many blossoms that they got top heavy and all started bending over! I cut a few to bring in the house to enjoy, to try to take some of the weight off. We’d enjoy them in the house until they started to die, and then I threw them in the yard for the chickens and guinea hens to enjoy. However, I couldn’t cut enough to stop them from flopping. In the end, that turned out to be a good thing, since the girls learned to help themselves to the seeds!
Enjoy this short video that the Dadz took of them having some fun with the flowers! Turn up the volume to hear their happy talking!

Yes, I love the different colored ones!
They are beautiful and it looks like they are thoroughly enjoying their sunflower lunch. Mama loves planting sunflowers but efury time she does da squirrels eat them.

Matt & Matilda
That happened to us last year! I had no idea what was eating them until we caught that squirrel in the act! This year there are not many squirrels around, thankfully.
They sure are funflowers! Chickens are much more interesting than I ever knew!
I really had no idea either how entertaining they were going to be!
That is so cool! I LOVE sunflower seeds so I’d be right in there with the chickens.
Just be careful…they are not too good about sharing. LOL
Cute video. They clearly like their sunflowers. 🙂
They know what they like and are not shy about going for it! 🙂
Such a beautiful photo! Happy chicks!
I’m so glad they ended up liking the flowers!
that video was sooo cute! I LOVE your sunflowers! While they are functional they are also happy and whimsical, love them!
They’ve always been a favorite of mine because of their bright and happy colors. It’s a bonus that the birds love them (and wild birds will go for them too).
I’ve always loved sunflowers! That’s so cool that the hens can have them!
The flowers that just keep on giving! 🙂
We love how the chickens grab the sunflower seeds….well. at least one did. 😉
Ha, you noticed how one was doing all the work, and the others were just scavenging! LOL
Such a fun video, they really are smart ones and darn cute too!
I’m pretty sure they are as motivated by food as some dogs are!! 🙂
They sure sound like they’re enjoying those seeds! Very clever stretching up to reach them.
It is so funny that they figure out how to get what they want!
Aww…that was very cute, I like chicks and sunflowers too. Don’t know why I can’t have them😸Pawkisses for a Happy Monday to all of you🐾😽💞
Hmmm…we wonder what the reason is for that? 🙂
Awww, that was adorable. I love how one was doing all the work and the rest were waiting for some of the seeds. Cute.
