You might remember our post about the herb garden I planted for the chickens. Included in that garden were some sunflowers. I put them in there at the back to enjoy their beauty, and to then later harvest the seedheads for the flock. Sunflower seeds are very good for them, especially at this time when many of them are molting and extra protein helps them to regrow their feathers. While the sunflowers’ growth was slow, eventually they got quite tall and then started to blossom.
Then they got so many blossoms that they got top heavy and all started bending over! I cut a few to bring in the house to enjoy, to try to take some of the weight off. We’d enjoy them in the house until they started to die, and then I threw them in the yard for the chickens and guinea hens to enjoy. However, I couldn’t cut enough to stop them from flopping. In the end, that turned out to be a good thing, since the girls learned to help themselves to the seeds!
Enjoy this short video that the Dadz took of them having some fun with the flowers! Turn up the volume to hear their happy talking!
