Our quest for a new dog food, or at least something different to add to the crew’s kibble, continues. We were contacted by Grandma Lucy’s about trying some of their food and treats. We had read good things about them on our friend’s 2 Brown Dogs Blog and knew we wanted to give it a try.

I had been immediately attracted by the name. Who doesn’t love a reference to Grandmas? But for me it was the name Lucy that held the most appeal. You might not know that I did not grow up with dogs, and that the only dog I had as a child was a stuffed dog named Lucy.

Lucy lived with me until I was well into my 20’s, but she was in pretty rough shape by then! The Lucy in Grandma Lucy’s is a real dog! This company is family owned since 1999 and it was named after their very own dog Lucy, an 11 year old English cocker spaniel. Lucy had become picky and developed allergies so needed healthy food and treats. The family started making their own homemade and a business was born.
“Family owned” also speaks to me, along with these highlights of their food and treats:
- Proudly made in the USA and Canada.
- Highest quality USDA inspected and approved ingredients.
- All natural, GMO-free, with no added hormones, by-products, or preservatives.
- Antibiotic free meats and human grade ingredients.
- All food and most treats are grain-free, with the only exception being their Organic Baked Treats (we’re not strictly grain free in our household so that is fine with us).
- Zero recalls in 16 years!
- Giving back to pets in need through #ProjectPetRak, pet-related Random Act of Kindness (click here to read more).

This is all well and good to make me happy! My feelings aside, it’s what the crew thinks that really matters. In the interest of full disclosure I must mention that my crew isn’t all that picky. However, many of you know that we recently lost our golden retriever Sheba to cancer.
Sheba’s appetite was increasingly waning over her last few weeks with us. She wouldn’t eat much, especially towards the end. You could probably count on one hand the things she would eat, and the Grandma Lucy’s Coconut Organic Baked Treats were one of those things. You can see in the photo below how her eyes lit up when she was about to eat one of these treats. She was also getting tired, so many times she didn’t want to get up for treats; we had to bring it to her. But you can see here, she was happy to get up and get some Grandma Lucy’s.

That made me happy. She liked the Fish Treats we received too, but it was those cute little bears that really thrilled her! Cricket shows you below what the Freeze-Dried Ocean White Fish treats look like. They look – and smell – like real fish (because it is – pollock is the only ingredient)! Guess what? These treats are for cats as well, and Samantha – who IS extremely picky as you know – loves them! I just had to break them into smaller pieces for her, which was easy to do.

We also received several samples of the freeze-dried foods that Grandma Lucy’s offers. Each sample size packet was perfect to let both Cricket and Luke try some on top of their regular kibble, and they gobbled it up. Each food, and there are several different lines to choose from, impressed me with its ingredients, but the Macanna seems especially healthy for senior dogs like Cricket, with these superfoods:
- Hemp hearts – for reducing joint pain
- Coconut – for improving skin and coat
- Kale – a healthy antioxidant (I grow kale in my own garden, mostly for the dogs)
- Turmeric – for reducing inflammation

All you do is add water to these foods and they are ready to go in 5 minutes. We plan to add these to our regular lineup of foods.

Their freeze-dried foods have many unique proteins to choose from as well, such as goat, rabbit, salmon, and venison. This can be very important to those who have dogs with allergies, or like us, are doing our best to avoid them ever developing any.
You can visit Grandma Lucy’s on their YouTube channel to learn more about this company, and find some treat recipes using their foods as well!
The pups have had Grandma Lucys food before and they loved it. The baked treats look great especially since Nala and Cody love fruit and Banana and Cranberry would probably be their favorites.
I just got some blueberry treats and when I opened the bag they smelled just like blueberries! I think my crew would love Banana and Cranberry as well.
These look like great snacks 🙂 Barley loves treats that are fish only, so they’re great for getting her attention, but I always forget how smelly they are until I get to work and realize my gloves smell like gross fishy treats after a walk! Thankfully Santa brought me gloves that are for work only, so we can check out these snacks without me having to worry about being the fishy person at work!
That’s a good idea to have separate gloves. No one wants to smell like fish at work! 🙂
sounds like some good stuff, great photos.
Those sure look like some yummy treats! Being healthy is just a bonus!
The crew agrees with that!
Some of my kitties wait each morning for their Grandma Lucy’s Whitefish and they Love it! I am very interested in the Macanna for our senior dog.
That sounds like such a great company with an impressive no-recall rcall record! Great review!
I think Kayden would love to try the coconut treats!
I love the pic of you and your stuffed Lucy. We haven’t tried these before but the boys have their paws crossed. ☺
My pup would love to try the Organic Peach Oven Baked Dog Treats.
I love all the fruit flavors they have to choose from. Luke loves fruit, even fresh, but Cricket will only eat it if it comes in a baked treat form! 🙂
I love Grandma Lucy’s, I like treats that I can give to my cats and dog. Plus they are high quality treats. I’m glad Sheba was able to enjoy some treats as well.
The kids really like apple treats so the apple we would like to try.
Aw, sweet Sheba. ❤ Callie didn’t want to eat anything but treats at the end, either. And like you, we were happy to give them to her…it was so good to see her eat something healthy.
Shadow and Ducky both refuse anything that smells like fish, including their regular food if I put fish oil on it. Can’t say as I blame them – I’m not a fan of fishy smells either. ????
This crew all loves fish so much, I’m just having to get used to that smell! LOL
Oh I bet that was something like Karma that this food came to you…
I love the photo with Lucy… I had nearly the same friend named Woofie… I still have him although Woofie was the reason that we had to leave a cable car once because of scandalization… my mother said she still has the blisters on her toes from walking 87 miles with me in tow :O)
I am trying to imagine what kind of scandal a stuffed dog named Woofie could possibly get into! I bet that’s a great story!
We’ve had their treats before and they are good. It’s so sweet to see Sheba and how happy she was to get a treat. Enjoy all the goodies!
