I mentioned in a previous Flower Friday post that our flowers around here seem to come in groups of colors. Late summer brought an influx of whites! We have phlox in shades of pinks and purples too, but the whites were the most prolific this year.
They are one of my favorites with their subtle sweet scent and I love to bring them in the house. I stopped doing that because of Luke’s allergies though….but there are still plenty to enjoy outside.
To the right of the white phlox in the above photo you can see our hydrangea bush. I’ve complained in the past that it’s just not a very spectacularly pretty bush, but I’ve also noticed it has a subtle sweet scent; and it likes to prove me wrong by turning a pretty pink before it goes by. I don’t remember it turning pink last year, I thought it went right to a bronze.
Later in the summer, this lily always surprises me with it’s huge blossoms. It’s the lone “true lily” in our yard, all of the others in yellows and oranges are daylilies. This one bloomed for quite a while.
You might remember we shared the red, white, and blue plant I bought earlier in the summer. Mother Nature decided to treat us to her own version by our patio (sometimes she can be nice!).
It’s funny, because that red bee balm is the only one that ever comes up by the patio! Bee balm is known to be invasive in it’s spreading, but this one always seems to stand alone. I don’t know what the white and blue (or purple) flowers are around it, they may just be wildflowers.
Last but not least, our cat Samantha has some pretty Alyssum in her boxes outside her windows.
Funny story about that – I didn’t want to spend any money in the spring to buy flowers for those boxes. So I just put some Alyssum seeds in there early summer, and then forgot all about it! It was hot and dry early summer, and I never even remembered to water them. Finally, I did, but by then I didn’t expect them to ever really grow. They certainly surprised me when they did! Again, nature likes to give us some nice surprises sometimes, and we’ll take ’em (goodness knows we have enough fails in the gardening department)! 🙂

We have a mess of wildflowers in the backyard. I’m prone to leave them there, but we have no ‘structured’ flowers. Although I did finally break down and buy some mums for the front steps. 🙂

Thank you! The funny thing is, half the flowers in my gardens could be wildflowers for all I know; and I can’t take credit for any of them. The previous owner did it all. I do plant or buy a few annuals though – and will definitely be getting some mums too. It’s not fall without mums on the steps!! 🙂
Beautiful flowers. My husband says no to flowers, because he is so allergic, so I have to admire other people’s flowers. BTW, I bought the duck toy that you had recommended on Amazon for River — as a 2nd birthday gift. She loves it!
It’s too bad about your hubby’s allergies, but I’m glad you still get to enjoy other’s flowers!
Oh, I love that you bought that duck toy, and that River loves it! It was a favorite of our beagle Cricket’s. Luke doesn’t play with it much, but it’s dirty and de-stuffed. It sits in his crate though; I don’t have the heart to get rid of it.
It’s a favorite of one of my sister’s beagles too, so there’s definitely something about that toy!

How pretty! I’ve still got a couple hydrangeas hanging on–a couple of them bloomed very late this year–but for the most part all of our flowers have been gone for a few weeks. Thanks for sharing all of the pretty things you’ve been enjoying.
The hydrangeas seem to last quite a while. We still have pink ones left, though most of them are dying off now.

Those white phlox are fabulous! I can only imagine how exquisite they are in a moonlight garden.

I’m chuckling about your forgetting to water the Alyssum. I did that with our Geraniums this year and shockingly, they are still blooming!

Mom LOVES the fragrance of the Phlox and the Casa Blanca Lily! Your flowers are all so pretty!
Because that lily is in a fenced off area, I never did get to smell it. I’ll have to be sure to do so next year; I’ve always loved the smell of Easter Lilies.
You still have a lot of beautiful flowers. We had a lot of bee balm, but it has gone by.

What a lovely summer selection! Like you, our flowers seem to go in color cycles too…Early Spring is yellow, Early summer is Pink…and also like you, later summer and early fall is mostly white!

I never would have planted one myself, but I am kind of glad we kept this one (you might not remember we moved it from a different part of the yard and really didn’t expect it to live).

we love lilies… but they will not grow in our backyard…
Well, it’s just as well if you have certain family members that might eat them. 🙂
We love our hydrangea bushes. The soil composition is what determines the color of the flowers. Our big ones are white, but the smaller blue one we bought a few years ago is pink every year. You can also buy the stuff to add to the soil depending on what color you would like, but we just wait and see what comes out. Lots of pretty flowers you have still.
I kind of like the surprise too, but I do think it would be fun to see it in blue as well. I almost think I have something in all my gardening junk that will do that!
