As summer winds down and autumn approaches, we can’t help but reflect on the kind of summer it was (or wasn’t, as the case may be). We had a cool and wet summer, and it did not turn out well for our vegetable garden, which was disappointing. We hope to harvest at least a bit more, but the shortening days are really slowing things down a lot. One thing that was a bright spot though, was our flower gardens. They do not seem to be as picky about the weather, and perhaps they even preferred all the rain. I thought we would share a few more of our favorites over these next few Flower Fridays.

Last year I saw another different flower to me at our new home, and had to get help to identify it. It turned out it was phlox – a flower I am actually familiar with. Only I thought phlox only came as a spring ground cover, so when these tall flowers bloomed later in the summer I did not recognize them.

I also forgot over the year how late they came, and at first I thought they weren’t coming back this year. They just wait a little later, and started blooming in early August. They really outdid themselves and I think there were many more than last year.

I love their sweet smell and often cut some to bring in the house. I enjoy the different purples, pinks, and whites that the phlox come in, and they blend in beautifully with everything else in the garden too.

They are just starting to fade now, but I can’t wait to see if they come in even stronger and thicker next year (and promised my sister she could dig some to take to her house too). I had to stop bringing them in the house anyway, because Luke seemed to be having some sort of allergy issue, so we wanted to eliminate anything that might be aggravating him (he’s doing better now, but we still don’t know what brought it on). We’ll be missing these beautiful colors as fall approaches and it all fades away, but it always gives us something to look forward to for next year!
We are happy to once again join the Flower Friday blog hop hosted by Da DB Boyz!
Photobombing chickens hahaha! Your flowers are beautiful, mom feels so stupid because she can probably only knows a few by name! Love Dolly
The chickens are starting to put Luke to shame when it comes to photobombing now, LOL!
Your Mom should not feel bad…I only know so many flowers because my mother loved to garden and taught me a lot.
Your phlox are amazing!!!! What a fabulous flower garden!!!
Thank you! I wish I could take credit, but it’s probably better that someone else created the garden anyway. I don’t have as much of a green thumb as I like to think I do. 🙂
Beautiful gardens, love the chickens hanging out.
It’s so fun that whenever we go outside, the chickens have to follow us around!
Your flowers still look so lovely, ours are getting their crunchy autumn coats and look slightly bedraggled. Signs the seasons are changing but I’m still waiting for temps less than 90 degrees.
Things are really starting to fade now though, with cooler nights and even days. We’re getting a warm spell this week – but for us that’s only in the 70’s!
Our summer was mostly buggy and muggy and HOT. What little rain we did get came in torrential downpours for the most part. The ground is so dry and hard that I can see little cracks here and there. If we get any remnants of Irma, I’ll probably be wringing out the carpet downstairs for weeks.
We got rain every day last week I think. Some of the trails where I walk the dogs are very muddy!
Our phlox never stays upright. Half the flower stalks are usually flopped over on the ground. But they’re still pretty.
I think ours are just held up by each other, because they’re so thick, and there’s a lot of other stuff around them too. I did have to put stakes on some that were along the edge of the garden, because they were flopping onto the pathway.
We thought of you as we were driving to see our grandbaby. There was a yard with ginny in it.
Oh, cool! I don’t think I’ve ever seen them anywhere else!
Wow, so many beautiful colors!! Thanks for sharing your garden and hopping along with us today!
I love sharing my flowers, so thanks for having the hop and giving me an excuse to! 🙂
The phlox is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us. We too had a wetter than normal summer and our vegetables didn’t like it at all.
Thank you for coming by to see them! Maybe this means we will have a dry winter? Though I do like to have some snow, just not a lot. 🙂
Those flowers are so pretty! We love the late blooming flowers…the ones that won’t let summer go.
They hang on just like we want to! 🙂
I envy you your garden. Those flowers are beautiful! Maybe the chickens want to show everyone how big they’ve gotten?!?
I think they are definitely show-offs, and they have to be in on everything!
WOW! Those are most beautious!
I didn’t know they grew that tall either! So pretty.
Poor Luke. He has such bad luck sometimes! Our second half of summer has been cool and wet, but we prefer that over the heat. Our only complaint is the grass is growing like crazy and needs to be mowed all the time!
It’s always something with Luke! He was doing better, now worse again, but I definitely think it’s weather related. he seems to get worse when it’s warmer and we have the windows open more.
I know on the grass. It’s been so wet it was over a week before ours finally dried enough so we could mow it!
me neither, your phlox is fabulous!!! I lobve it so much it is a sweet memory of childhood somehow ;o)
It is….it always reminds me of my childhood too.
