Our cat Samantha has been taking good care of her chicks, and they are growing like weeds! If you didn’t see how small they were when they first came home, check out our post from two weeks ago here: The Chicks are Here!

So far, they are all healthy and doing well. They are very active, and keeping us busy cleaning up after them and filling their food. As I’ve said to many people “all they do is eat and poop!”
I’ve been concerned they are going to outgrow their space before it’s warm enough to put them outside. The Dadz added some perches up high, and they really seem to love that, and it gives them more places to go, and hopefully enough space for a couple more weeks.
They’ll be three weeks old tomorrow, and as you can see their feathers are really coming in, and they like to fly.
Whenever we open the door to feed them, at least a couple jump up on that cardboard edge, and now they’ve started jumping out as well!
They are not one bit afraid of Samantha now. The first time we had to take them out to clean their cage, a couple got loose, Sam came in the room and they freaked out. They’re over that! We still keep a close eye on things, though I feel pretty sure Sam wouldn’t harm them.
The coop is coming along! I imagine Sam’s chicks are going to have the best digs in town, and she’s going to miss them when they move outside.
Maybe we’ll have to take her out there to visit them. 🙂
Sams a great chicken momma! Your set up rocks.
So cute! I’m pretty sure Soth would not be kind to them–all he wants is to get out and get the birds at our bird feeder!
Sam just seems to have a natural mothering instinct – I think she would have made a great kitty Mom, but since she didn’t get that opportunity, she’s making up now. I’m sure a lot of cats would react more like Soth!
Dear God, they got big! Does Sam try to mother them at all, or does she just keep a watchful eye? Have they ever had a face-to-face?
I’ve always erred on the side of caution and not let them get too close to her. Of course, she can’t see them anyway, and she really just seems like she’s ignoring them most of the time! But she must find their chirping soothing.
I love that Sam’s taken them under her “wing” … I have a feeling that if they weren’t in the cage, you’d find them snuggled around her. Either way, the chicks are in good paws 🙂 And they are just too cute!
Wouldn’t that be so cute to have them snuggled around her?! I wish I dared to try it. 🙂
They are really growing! I didn’t know chickens could fly, only hop around, hopefully Sam is too old to do any thing about it. The coop is huge! Love Dolly
I’m pretty sure Sam doesn’t have the ambition left to attack anything at her age! We made the coop big in case we ever decide to expand the flock. 🙂
I actually read that chickens fly better when they are younger. But they like to roost in trees when they’re free ranged, so they can definitely do it!
That looks like a real project in the house. Hope their coop is ready soon. We know that even animals that hunt seem to understand “family” and don’t harm those creatures.
The only good part of having them in the house is that it’s convenient to check on them. Some people have said that they would smart smelling, but we’re pretty diligent about trying to keep their cage clean so that doesn’t happen (so far, so good – knock wood). The coop is pretty much ready now, other than getting supplies for it, but we just have to wait for it to be warm enough for them to be out there.
Wow! They have gotten big! And how cool Sam watches out for them. We’re not sure we would be as helpful.
We think maybe Zoey would have that mothering instinct too, but probably not the boys!
Maybe Sam should have visiting rights in the new digs? BTW…NICE coop! ????
Thank you! We made the coop extra big in case we decide to expand the flock in the future. 🙂
They sure are cute and growing so quickly!
How exciting! Bentley and Pierre would lose their minds over baby chicks.
I’m pretty sure Luke and Cricket might too….so they don’t get visiting rights! 🙂
Oh my goodness are they adorable
Lily & Edward
The coop looks great, it will be easier to clean than the small ones that the stores like to sell. My cats were the same way with my chicks too.
That is so cool your cats were like that too! Yes, that was one thing I didn’t understand about the coops we saw in stores…it didn’t look like it would be easy to keep them clean. I wanted it to definitely be big enough to walk into (and we wanted room for possibly expanding the flock as well).
Sam you are a super cute chicken-mom ;o) Our WHFT once adopted chicklets he watched over them like a hawk… but it ended not really good ;o)
The chicks look fabulous. I think you might have to get something else for Sam to mother, it seems to have made her really happy.
It really does seem to be making Sam happy…we might have to come up something else for her when the chicks are gone!
They grow so fast! I let our chickens out all the time, and Roxy would go check them out. Since they were bigger than her, they would peck her head and chase her off. I use to feed them cooked spaghetti, which is hilarious to watch, and Roxy would think she wanted some too.
Oh, the spaghetti sounds fun, we’ll have to try that!
They’re getting so big! Looks like you all have got your hands full 🙂
That’s for sure! They’re more work than I thought they’d be! 🙂
Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing as Daisy – the one chick looks like she wants to jump on Sam’s back. ????
And, yes, the coop does look great! It looks bigger than our smaller utility shed! The chicks are still adorable at 3 weeks old – I’d love to pet them all and nuzzle them against my cheek!
I had to put the camera down at one point, because they did jump out when Sam was right there – though they didn’t try to ride her or anything. LOL
They are very soft….but they don’t all like being nuzzled too much – they start squawking! It really seems like it’s the same ones that come up on that edge when I’m there, so they are definitely the more friendly ones.
We made the coop big in case this goes well and we want to expand the flock. But we also had in mind that if it doesn’t go well, we can turn it into a shed!
Wow look at them grow! The coop is looking great. That one chick looks like she wants to jump onto Samantha’s back!
Thank you – the coop is just about finished and ready to use now! I think that chick was definitely contemplating jumping on Sam – LOL!
