What could these two things possibly have in common? Well, fitness for dogs is not just about physical exercise but mental too. Earlier this week I shared some video of Luke showing off his “close it” skills with the kitchen cabinets and drawers. I also mentioned we wanted to move onto bigger doors, so we started on that yesterday as well. Luke is an eager pupil, and this week’s #52Snapshots of Life theme is “Teach”.
We put the post it note on the door to remind him to touch it. It didn’t take him too long to catch on.

Sometimes I wonder who’s teaching whom.

Training is fun, but since our weather has finally turned really nice, we want to get outdoors more. This week something exciting for the dogs happened.
THE POOL IS OPEN!!!
I think it’s pretty good extra exercise for them to be jumping in and out of the pool, plus we can play longer if I know they can stay cooler. It probably won’t stay as warm as it has been this week yet, but the pool will now be there when we need it for cooling off or for just having fun in!

I can see they’re having lots of fun in the pool!
I taught myself to open doors, but I’m not so keen on closing them.
Great post! Luke, you are a smart boy! I trained Jasper to close the cabinet doors and he was a quick learner, too. Amazing what they’ll do for treats! Love the pool play, too. Fun!
Love the use of post-it notes! Our pool blew away a few weeks ago 🙁 The wind in Montana is brutal! Hopefully, the kiddie pools will be here soon so we can get a new one!
Bringing out the pool tomorrow! Can’t wait to see Jax play in the water.
Luke you are so clever! Your mom is right you need to be challenged when you are that smart so keep pushing her for more! Love Dolly
Thank you, Dolly! We’re trying to figure out what’s going to be next! After the conference, I’m hoping to find a nose work class for him, I think that would be perfect.
I love how quickly Luke has caught on to the doors! I could never teach Barley that trick because I just know she’d be like a toddler and find ways to lock me out of rooms while she got into mischief!
I have to laugh every time Luke closes the cabinet door on me when my arm is still in there! Luckily most of our room doors don’t lock. 🙂
good boy luke, our pool was open until I moved it into the duck pen for them.
He is a smartie- and cute too 🙂
Love close the door and so does Kilo. I can’t teach him to open any doors or he’ll be raiding the bins and cupboards, he’s such a greedy little bandit. That pool looks so good. We could jump right in as so hot and humid here today. Have a great weekend.
This weekend has been so hot here too! The pool has been getting lots of use. Right now we have thunderstorms rolling through, and I think it’s going to be much cooler on the other side of them.
The pool look like alot of fun. We have had some great weather for it!
Nice job Luke! Jade likes to close doors for treats too. That pool looks extremely refreshing!
Luke is a clever boy! The only trick Max knows with doors is how to lock himself into the bathroom!
Opening doors is a great thing to learn; closing doors, not so much. I open my Pop’s door every night.
The Momz won’t teach me how to open doors, I can’t imagine why!
Love, Luke
I’m sure with that skill Luke is going to lock one of the cats in a closet! Lol
You’re probably right….it’s bound to happen, once we get him used to closing all of the big doors. 🙂
That’s a great trick! We haven’t thought of teaching that one. We’re trying side-step now (not as practical, but very cute!). It’s going slowly!
I think nose work, and/or a little agility will be next on the agenda. We’ll work more on these kinds of tricks next winter.
Luke is very smart! And that pool looks great…for dogs. Of course us cats have no interest in water. 🙂
Our Sam actually kind of likes water….from a faucet anyway. She might not go for the pool though. 🙂
There’s no fun like pool fun! 😀 Love the “close door” pics.
Hooray for pool season! We have two hard plastic kid pools for our pups, and they have a blast jumping in and out of them!
It’s nice that it’s finally pool weather after your long winter. We’re going to a parade tomorrow so hoping for good weather!
I am so impressed with Luke! That is such a cool trick to teach him.
yes where is the treat? It’s great that you started into a hopefully great summer with a pool pawty!
Looks like a fun pool party! I love Luke’s “wheres my treat face” too.
I love that look on Luke’s face after he closed the door, haha! Luke is so smart and he seems to catch on so quick! What’s next on his clicker training agenda?
We’ll work on the doors a little more, but I think we’re going to work on some agility stuff in the yard while the weather is nice. That and I hope to find a nose work class for him after I get back from the BlogPaws conference.
Way to go Luke. That looks like something I could teach Jack to do too.
Luke really caught on to this much quicker than I thought he would!
Ah Luke you are so smart! You remind me a lot of my Koda. He is a very eager pupil as well and sometimes gets overly excited when we try and do a training session. I know he is just excited to learn something new, but a lot of the time I have to make sure he is exercised before we train or he’s just to jumpy lol.
Looks like your pack is super happy about the pool being back!!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
That’s a good idea to be sure they exercise first, Jenna. There are times that Luke is really unfocused, and that might be why.
It was hot over the weekend, but no pool out here yet. Mom says she teaches us stuff, but she is also teaching herself to work with us. It is all a big team effort! Thanks for joining in the hop!
