We’re trying to move on from feeding our dogs only dry kibble. Both girls started out their lives that way, and it wasn’t until I started blogging that I learned there was so much more. We still feed what we feel is very good quality kibble, but now we add things to it to make it more attractive to the crew; and more importantly, even healthier.

Sheba’s appetite has waned some due to her cancer, so it’s vital that we keep her food new and hopefully a bit exciting for her. It’s important to keep our senior girls healthy, but the choices we make now will have the longest-term effects on Luke at only three years old. I hope that the knowledge and opportunities I gain now as a blogger will lead to a longer and healthier life for him as well as his sisters.
For now, I like to keep their base of quality kibble so that I don’t make big changes that might not agree with their digestion. That makes it easier to try different things to see what they like; not that they are picky, other than Sheba right now. But I can see some additional gusto at meal time when we step things up.

Luke and Cricket are both very active and they need extra nutrition to keep those energy levels up. As we try to keep Sheba feeling as good as possible and to keep her strength up, we need to keep adding things to her food. I don’t always have the time or ambition to make homemade food toppers, but there are great choices out there so that I don’t have to.

One of those we got the opportunity to try recently was TruDog. Though I don’t see us ever switching over completely to a raw diet, I am very willing to try some of the different options to add a little bit of that type of nutrition while adding some variety to the crews’ meals. There are a lot of benefits to raw food that I do not discount.
Tru-Dog’s Boost Me freeze-dried super boost is perfect for what we’re doing. It couldn’t be any easier – all you do is top their food with one tablespoon per cup of food. Since we add other nutritional supplements as well, this is just one more small step, and the raw aroma seems to be very attractive to them. It certainly gets Sheba eating.
The benefits to Boost Me include:
- It enhances nutritional absorption,
- Increases energy and vitality,
- Reduces allergies and itchy skin,
- And helps to boost the immune system.

It can be added to wet or dry food. I love that the beef for this food is born and raised in the USA. It is high quality, free range, grass fed beef, and the food is produced in a USDA certified and inspected facility. It’s free of anything artificial and is 99% real meat, vital organs, and meaty bone.
The company was started by Lori Taylor after she lost her own dog Truman to cancer. She wanted all dogs and their families to have access to the natural food they need. Their products include a complete raw diet, along with the Boost, treats, vitamins and other supplements, as well as ear and dental care.
We received two dental care products to try: Gel Me and Spray Me. Both products are made with natural and holistic ingredients, which is always my preference. The crew wants nothing to do with having their teeth brushed, and other dental products I’ve tried just had too many chemical-sounding ingredients for me.
Both products are easy to use since after applying, the ingredients bond with the dogs’ saliva to coat their entire mouths. The gel gets rubbed along their tooth and gum line, and the spray just needs one application on each side of the mouth. Daily use is needed and it takes time to see results so we don’t have those to share with you yet. This crew is fussy about having anything done to them, so we have to take things slowly, especially with Luke. So far they are very tolerant of the spray especially, even Luke, so I have high hopes!

Would you like the opportunity to try the same products we did? You can enter our giveaway to win the same sample pack we tried. Just fill out the widget at the end of this post.
Don’t want to wait to win? TruDog is having a huge sale right now so it would be a great time to order some for your pets. We also received a small bag of Treat Me Gourmet Gobbler Crunch Delight, and those were a huge hit with Luke when I used them for taking our posed photos for this review. By the way, their SuperFood comes in beef and turkey and their treats in several different proteins, all from USA raised and harvested meat and fish. We feel like that is the next best thing to raising your own, and even though we dream of having a small farm one day, it’s unlikely we’ll ever go that far. We’ll be starting with raising chickens for eggs only, and we’re all excited about that.

Thanks for sharing – always wanted chickens!
Hope your adventures in chicken raising go well! If the poodles and I can impart any of our knowledge from keeping our own poultry, we’d be happy to!
Thank you for offering! We just might take you up on that. My hubby had chickens in the past, but that was a LONG time ago and I’m sure a lot of practices have changed by now. 🙂
I hope your crew are enjoying their new food. For us pet parents – there’s a sense of ease knowing they are enjoying good nutritious food.
The dental products sure sound great. Old man Thunder could sure use them. 🙂
Never heard of them, thanks for sharing.
Those dental products sound great! Barley will occasionally let me brush her teeth, but it is not something that is really pleasant for either of us and definitely doesn’t get done consistently. We try to occasionally incorporate some toppers and things into meals, too, but our kibble has been good for Barley for years, so hopefully once Rye is done with puppy food it will be equally good for her!
And chickens?! I would love to have chickens–but I hate eggs and I don’t think my neighborhood would really like for me to have chickens, so I am so excited I can live vicariously through you! My parents have bees and I keep telling them that chickens are the next logical step 😉
That made me chuckle – because the main reason I want chickens is for the fresh eggs! I’m not sure I could do bees….they would make me too nervous.
Even if the dogs let me brush their teeth, I just know how lazy I am, and I know I wouldn’t be consistent at it. This spray is so much easier!
The tooth spray sounds interesting. Bentley was very compliant but absolutely refused to let me brush his teeth.
Our beagle Kobi, who loved absolutely everything, just would not tolerate toothpaste. I can’t tell you how many different flavors we tried to no avail. It wasn’t the brushing either – it was the taste of the toothpaste itself. Sheba is compliant with most things as well, but she just never liked the toothbrush or paste either. The spray is so quick it makes it much easier.
The pups have tried TruDog Feed me and they love it and get it for breakfast quite often. I’m sure the pups would love other Trudog products.
We might have to try the Feed Me as well!
Sounds like a great option for those of you who want to use at least some raw food. With Shadow’s and Ducky’s IBS issues, and my own distrust of raw food, I’ll stick with what I know works for my girls. Thanks, though, for the opportunity to win some TruDog products. Have a great day!!
Sometimes health issues make trying new things impossible, and I understand that. I was hesitant about raw foods as well – but I try to keep an open mind, and I can since so far my dogs seem to be able to eat pretty much anything! (knock wood)
My fur babies always enjoying trying new foods.
It’s good to have adventurous dogs! This crew won’t turn down much of anything, other than fresh fruits and vegetables (and Luke won’t turn down most of those). 🙂
Food toppers are a great idea and glad you found one that works for you. We just get regular wet food to mix with our kibble which is boring! Love Dolly PeeS: We are so behind on reading blogs, hope you had a great holiday!
We did have a great holiday, thank you, and hope you all did as well!
At least wet food is better than just plain old kibble! 🙂
This is a new brand to us and it sounds terrific. Food makes such a difference in our pets’ health. Chickens would be fun!
I hope the chickens are going to be fun, and not just a lot of work! LOL Considering how much time I spend trying to find fresh eggs around here, I think it will be well worth it though.
Chickens are fun. Make sure to get a bigger coop than you think you are going to need. Plus look into making it predator proof. They are pretty easy to care for. My animals all love the freeze dried foods, I am always looking at different brands.
Thanks for the tips, Edie! We know there are predators in our area, so that is definitely a concern. Our neighbors up the street lost their chickens – I think to bears? So security will definitely be a priority! I’m really excited about it, and can’t wait until we get them in the spring!
It seems like it is pretty good for our woofie friends!
Cool products/review. We have used the TrueDog dental spray/gel stuff. Not consistently but so far it seems doing a fairly decent job in conjunction with other dental care that we’ve added. Good luck on your results. The company is nice to work with too and the vigorous head shake upon tasting always smile inducing. ☺️
They don’t seem to love the taste of the dental stuff, that’s for sure! But then again, I could never find a toothpaste that any of them loved either – and this is over far more quickly. At least I know all that lip smacking and licking is spreading it around their mouths. 🙂
Sounds pretty good. We never heard of this kibble
Happy New Year
Lily & Edward
that sounds like a magic potion :o) you will get chickens>? good idea… so you can raise your own food… that’s like planting a milk bone tree, right?
Oh Phenny, your comment is priceless! A milk bone tree. Made me laugh out loud. ????❤????????
Phenny is already learning how to be good for a few laughs!
I’m thinking a milk bone tree would probably be easier, but we’ll see. 🙂
Sounds like a great additive for our food. We won’t be switching to a raw diet either, but are trying to cut back on kibble and increase freeze dried foods instead. Good stuff and we love it. We will have a look online.
I am seeing some debate on whether dehydrated or freeze dried is better. You said freeze dried, so is that what you’re leaning towards, over dehydrated?
I don’t know which is better really, but I like the ones that are pieces and not ground up like flour the best. It may just be a visual for me, but I feel better about those brands.
I agree! I feel that way about canned food too. I like to see chunks of real food, not just a ground up mush!
