Macanna (muh-kan-uh) is Hawaiian for “gift” and the K9 Crew was thrilled to get some of Grandma Lucy’s tropical gifts to enjoy (and to be able to give our readers a chance to win as well!). We had a little summer party out on the deck so they could try these goodies out.

We’re all about the summer fun here, so we got out the balls for some play time, had some appetizers, and then went on to the main course!

It’s not a party without some ball play, so Cricket insisted they do that first, even though Luke was more interested in the food.

Grandma Lucy’s has been on our menus for a while now; I’m a fan of the company, their quality ingredients, and their values, and Luke and Cricket simply love their products for the taste.
We think the Macanna bag says it all: “Grandma Lucy’s is proud to be able to create this food as our gift to you. The gift to help support many healthy and happy years with your pet through whole foods and superior nutrition.”
Each ingredient in Macanna freeze-dried foods was chosen for a specific benefit for a dog’s health.
- Healthy proteins such as beef and salmon.
- Pinto beans – low in fat, rich in fiber and folate. They burn slowly so give your dog an increased and consistent energy level.
- Hemp – High in Omega 3’s and 6’s, it is non-allergenic and promotes a healthy skin and coat.
- Coconut – considered a superfood that promotes good digestion, joint health, and a shiny coat.
- Pumpkin – full of vitamins and helps with good digestion.
- Kale – Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, high in iron and calcium, thereby promoting strong bones.
- Other ingredients: carrots, blueberries, turmeric.
Many of these ingredients are foods that I grow in my own garden not just for ourselves but for the dogs as well. We often supplement their dry food with turmeric and coconut oil. These are ingredients we truly believe in, made simple for preparation.
Macanna Starters freeze-dried treats contain only 5 simple ingredients, all from the same list as their foods. Luke and Cricket were ready to dive right in to sampling those “appetizers” first! I think their faces show their enjoyment!
We’ve been fans of family owned and operated Grandma Lucy’s for a while now, and for many reasons including the quality ingredients listed above.
- None of those ingredients are from China, and 87% are from the USA.
- All foods are made in the USA (California) in small batches.
- They are all natural, non-GMO, with no preservatives or by-products.
Most are grain free, except for their Organic Baked dog treats. The coconut treats we received are wheat free, made with organic oat flour. You may remember when we did a review earlier this year, that the Organic Coconut Baked treats were our late golden retriever Sheba’s absolute favorite; Luke and Cricket loved them as well. They were certainly happy to see a bag of those on the table!
The freeze-dried foods are easy to prepare, simply add warm water and wait 5 minutes. The Macanna pre-mix contains the same ingredients only you can add your own protein! Since I often cook extra chicken, and sometimes turkey or beef, when cooking for the humans, this works out well for us too.

Sorry I missed this one! With Delilah’s digestive issues, I’m always on the lookout for treats she can have. They sound perfect for us!
My dog Blackie is 13 years old and love plays with other dogs as much as possible. Thanks for sharing.
My dog Blackie is 13 years old and love to walk. He also plays with other dogs as much as possible. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome! Blackie sounds like a very active dog for his age – that is great!!
Monty is 16 years old, his favorite activity year-round is sleeping.
16 – that is wonderful! He’s earned that sleep! 🙂
I have a chihuahua and they love the sun. She loves her walks during the warm months, we walk her during the winter but she is so bundled up she doesn’t enjoy them as much.
Ha, none of us like bundling up for walking!! Our Cricket loves to be in the sun as much as possible too.
Nala and Cody like to dig to keep cool even though they could go inside with the AC.
I love it when dogs choose to enjoy the fresh air outdoors! 🙂
My dog loves boating!
We really miss our boat – they are so much fun, and two of our past dogs loved it too.
My dogs like to sun bathe! I have to remind them to come in when they start getting hot!
Ah, yes, Cricket will lie in the sun until she’s panting away! LOL
I think the girls would enjoy the treats. I’m not sure about the food itself with their sensitive tummies. But I entered anyway. We’ll see.
If you win, you can always give the little packets away if they don’t turn out to be good for the girls.
My Fir baby’s favorite activity is to go to the beach and go swimming. He loves running on the beach and playing in the waves
Oh, that sounds so fun! This crew has only ever swam in lakes and rivers, never at the ocean with waves.
love grandma lucys!!! they are a fave!
The dogs like to dig holes in the shade and hang out there no matter what the summer weather is. There’s something about a dog and digging and a nice cool hole that screams summer!
Our yard in the summer wouldn’t seem the same without some holes here and there! 🙂
My hubby hates it when they dig, but I think it’s good exercise for them!
Staying cool with freezer treats
These guys love the pumpkin/yogurt ones I make!
trips to the lake and river! coming fishing with mom and dad
We used to love taking our dogs fishing back when we had a boat – they loved it too!
Sissy boss, lol. They sound delish.
My dogs love to swim. They have enjoyed Grandma Lucy’s in the past. I may or may not have helped myself to the baked treats a time or two.
Oh my gosh, the little coconut bears smell so good! 🙂
Looks doodle*licious! I’m just starting to get the Boys to acknowledge salmon. I want to try some sardines on them soon. They’ve never been fond of seafood and it’s so good for them. Love how you “re-did” the area for the photo shoot!
Thank you!
These guys go nuts for fish of any kind, and they especially love sardines!
Cricket and her balls … she is one-of-a-kind and we love her (and Luke) so much!
Grandma Lucy ‘s sounds pretty great-and enjoy the summer fun for sure!
What a fun party!
Somebody will be thrilled to win that yum!
These look amazing! My favorite summer activity? The same as all year, annoying Cody BOL!
