On this Thankful Thursday, Luke and I are thinking about how thankful we are for our (almost) daily walks. What I love about this time of year is that we don’t have to wait until later in the morning for it to warm up before going for our walks. It’s the opposite instead, we try to go early to beat the heat – not that we’ve really had much heat yet!
Because the bugs are so bad this year, it’s nice to have the cooler mornings since I can wear long pants and long sleeves as protection from getting bit. Luke and I both still load up with natural bug sprays, which makes getting out the door almost as time consuming as bundling up in the winter (it’s always something, isn’t it?), but I’d still much rather walk in the early morning (around 8 am which is early for us these days anyway). It’s the quietest and prettiest time of the day, and I like to have our walk done before getting into whatever work I have to do for the day. That way Luke is more content to just hang out with me. It’s also easier to walk him before the birds are out free ranging, so I don’t have to distract him from them as we go through the yard!

Since the bugs have been SO bad, I’ve considered not walking some mornings, however, when I see Luke’s excitement when we’re getting ready, I know how important it is to him. We have another whole post to write about the challenges of bugs this year and how we’re dealing with it, and we’ll share some of the products we’re using.
Luke knows the morning routine, and if we veer away from it, he is following me around right on my heels! He did that the other morning when the Dadz had the day off and was going to walk Luke. It was nice for me to be able to get an early start on my bookkeeping work, and nice for Luke to have some time with his Dadz. I put his harness on and sprayed him with repellent while Dad was taking care of the birds. Once we did that, he knew he was going, and romped around the house in excitement while waiting for Dad!
What’s your favorite time of day to walk?
Thank you to our friends at Brian’s Home for hosting the Thankful Thursday blog hop. Please visit them and other blogs through the links below!
What a nice walk, so nice you get out and go.
It’s really best that I just get us out and go….if I think about it too much it might not happen! LOL
I really need to get in the habit of taking walks – or some exercise. Maybe if I got a dog that would encourage me? {hahaha. can you imagine Bear’s reaction to a dog?!}
Oh yes, I can imagine. That would make for some great stories though! π
I am so happy that you both love your walks! We do our “pack walks” in the evening, which is super wonderful at this time of year. Shyla goes riding with me in the morning, and the boys go with the Runner for a trail run in the morning… so everyone is willing to chill out for the day!
You do so much! Evenings here tend to be very buggy, and I’m far more of a morning person anyway. When we used to have Cricket, we always played ball in the evenings. Luke still likes to play with toys in the evening time, so we usually just romp around the house. π
My favorite time of day to walk is never- I am lazy π
My oldest sister is like you in that way too, and my other sister is more active like me. The oldest always rolls her eyes when we try to get her to do more. LOL
The mom has started back into walking again. She likes to go in the morning too…when it’s cooler and quieter. Though lately it’s been raining lots and she hasn’t been able to go.
We’ve had so much rain this spring, but luckily a lot of it didn’t come until later in the day. But we’ve missed a lot of days too. I had said we’d walk in the rain, but I need it to be warmer than it has been to do that!
I also enjoy a morning walk with the pack…it’s so much quieter π
There is just something special about that time of day!
What a wonderful boy Luke is! My walks vary based on the weather of course, but evening walks are my favorite.
I think it’s cute that Luke knows his early morning routine and that he looks forward to it! How blessed you are to have such a pretty area to take a walk in!
We certainly are! We could not love it more.
I just love you Luke. I’d go for a walk with you even with the bugs. Pass the bug spray.
Have a woof woof day, Luke. My best to your mom. β₯

We have about the same number of bugs this year as usual. The annoying ones are the bees, but they don’t usually show up until later in the afternoon…they seem to “love” pestering poor Ducky. I had to bring her inside yesterday and give her a Benadryl. I’m not sure if it actually stung her; but she was snapping at it an awful lot as it was flying around her. Poor girl. She was really getting more anxious by the second. Thankfully, the Benadryl made her a bit sleepy so she was fine after her nap.
Poor Ducky! The bees don’t bother much around here. We do get the deer and horse flies when the weather gets hot. They are really annoying, and it HURTS when they bite!
Early morning are the best in our books too and we don’t have that many bugs!
You’re so lucky!!
I always think about the morning has broken song when we are out and about in the early morning.. ist is great and so special. we have normal bug population this year, but the snails will kill us this (non)summer…
Ugh, snails! They must like that cool wet weather. Guess someone must, because it’s sure not us!
We’re sure glad Luke is enjoying those walks and we’ll bet his anxious prancing around the house is wonderful to see. Thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!
Luke can be so serious sometimes, so it’s always fun to see him romping around the house happily!
You have bugs, we have heat. Early is the only way to get in walk.
I imagine we’ll get the heat at some point. I at least hope that means the bugs won’t be as bad!
We are out for our walk or run in just a minute, meaning about 6 am, but that is pretty much all year. We love to be up and at it super early. Enjoy the walking. Bummer with all the bugs, though.
I used to like getting up and going earlier, I don’t know what happened! Now it takes me forever just to drag myself out of bed!
We love early morning walkies too – at 7am, Luke! We have had way too much rain and humidity lately, which brings out even more bugs so I’ve been wearing my Ben’s-treated bandana a LOT!
My Momz needs to get up earlier! I kind of like sleeping a little later too though. π
Love, Luke
