Watch our video below for the answer! Also seen, while guinea hens are known for being noisy, they have some really pretty tunes they sing as well. Be sure to turn your volume up for the full effect!
This video showed all the newest additions to the farm – the young chickens and the young guinea hens. It is the Black Australorp in the video making the “purring” noise, and you got a nice look at our pretty Auracanas and Wyandottes as well.
Did you know that chickens make a purring noise? We sure didn’t before the first time we heard it!

I didn’t know they did that! I’ve seen the hug their people though!
Some like to sit in my hubby’s lap too. π
Beautiful bird and tunes.
Wow, they really do purr!!! I love it!
Pretty cool, huh? π
I totally didn’t know this until one of our orpingtons started purring and I thought I’d lost my mind π
I know, right? I had to make hubby listen to make sure I wasn’t the first time I heard it!
Hearing a chicken purr is a first for me.
I imagine it was for a lot of people!! π
That is a great video, they do sound like they are purring.
Thank you, Ellen!
That is so sweet, Jan! That sounds like a bunch of very contented birds overall, purring, and lightly singing, love it! No worries today for them, just happy! Oh, and the purring…were they not raised by Sam? Somewhat anyway, so maybe they heard it from her and learned it! π
I was waiting for someone to say that about Sam, Lynn, good job!!
We never knew they could purr. Are they part cat? π
Maybe because they were raised by a cat? π
Totally LOVE the purring! That’s a Top 40 hit if I ever heard one. πΆ
Agreed!!!
Oh my gosh, I never knew this! How cool is that?j
It really is cool, isn’t it? I couldn’t believe it the first time we heard it!
That is so funny! They sound like Bentley snoring.
π
They are so cool and the Dad says he sort of remembers a sound like that from way back when.
I was watching the video when I looked up to see Ducky tilting her head, trying to understand what she was hearing. Shadow, my wise girl, just ignored it and went a few feet away to lay down. π€π΄β€οΈβ€οΈ
Love the purring chicken! And the guinea songs!
I bet Ducky would love the birds!
We raised chickens when I was growing up. I don’t remember them purring. I love your video.
Thanks for joining Wordless Wednesday.
Have a fabulous day. β₯
Thank you! We were pretty taken aback the first time we heard it, that’s for sure! π
Although their heads are a bit on the ugly side, the ones with the b/w feathers are really pretty. You have a nice mix of feathered friends!
Thank you! Yes, you definitely have to look past their heads to see their beauty! π
