The theme for this week’s #52Snapshots of Life photo challenge is “Summer“. I’ve already been sharing a lot of swimming photos so far this summer, so I thought this time I’d try to make it a little more scenic.
I took Sheba swimming one town over to Mascoma Lake. I grew up not too far from the lake, so it’s always been special to me. Some of my best childhood Summer memories are from spending time at a friend’s house on the lake. The rail trail runs right along it on the further end and other side from where we lived; we’ve found this great swimming spot that just the locals really know about and that you can only walk (or boat) to. Sheba and I got over a 1/2 hour walk in plus 15 minutes of swimming for her. I’ve been taking it easier on her since her arthritis had been acting up, but I did increase our walk this time and I’m happy to report that she was doing great afterwards! She seems to have come through her bad spell, and we’re very happy about that. We only had to give her Rimadyl for a couple of days, which is great. The longer we can keep her off the meds the better.
Unfortunately the old abandoned building at this location now says “SOLD” on it, so I wonder if No Trespassing signs will go up next. We’ll see. I can’t take the other dogs swimming here anyway since they can both be reactive and we frequently run into off leash dogs on the rail trail (even though the town has a leash law).
The morning was overcast so I edited the photo a bit through Photoshop by adding some blue sky and trying to enhance the greens a bit. I have some other fun photos of Sheba splashing and shaking that I’ll also be sharing soon.
Enjoy your Summer Sunday!

As I look at this picture – I am so jealous. It’s so freaking hot and humid here, and that lake looks so inviting….
What a lovely shot. You’re so lucky to have a quiet place to swim in the summer.
It’s a pretty photo. I love how the mountains have a slight purplish tinge to them. Did you add that or is that natural?
That is natural, and thank you!
Walking and swimming are great exercise. I’ll bet that helps keep you young!
We sure hope so! 🙂
That looks like a great spot to swim. Hope it will still be open to you.
Great picture and special place.
The Lady is NOT happy seeing all the dogs swimming. She really wishes I did too. Oh well. Love Dolly
That lake looks like a great place to hang out during the summer. Sheba sure is enjoying herself.
Great that Sheba was OK. Looks lovely. I hope you don’t lose access. We have a similar house on the ravine. Kilo loves going in behind as feels like a hike but no other dogs (we have the same problem as you in the park or ravine – other off leash or even on leash dogs can be a disaster) Hope you had a great weekend. XS
The lake looks so refreshing I want to jump right in and splash, too!
One of these days I think I will join the dogs in there!
I agree wholeheartedly with your reply to Easy Rider!! The so-called progress around here has turned our little town into a miniature version of Long Island! I hate it!
PS. The 15-minute swim is probably what helped Sheba the most — low-impact aerobics! Wish we had a lake around here that I could take my girls swimming in!!
I agree, I think swimming is one of the best things for their joints.
It looks very nice there! I like finding places that are not overcrowded on the lake too. We try to visit during the week, because all the boats out on the weekends make a lot of waves and the water is not as clear. I want to try squeezing Shiner in the car this week but it might be a tight fit.
We do most of our walking and swimming during the week on my days off. We tend to stay closer to home on the weekends since there’s so many more people around. I like to have things all to ourselves! 🙂
Am I the friend with the house near the lake. Lol. 🙂 I love that spot. Sheba looks so happy. I think we took Shadow there, right? And Kobi? Am I correct?
I don’t remember going to the lake a lot with you until we were older and went canoeing. I was thinking more of Loree , before you came along. 🙂
I am not sure if we took Shadow and Kobi to that spot…there was also another place on that trail we took them, further down, closer to Lebanon.
Wow! That is so beautiful. I would love to have a scenic view like this. ♥
Great memories! Hopefully you don’t end up with the no trespassing sign!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Great summer shot 🙂
what a great place for a swim and what fun that must have been growing up! Hope they don’t end up putting up a no trespassing sign like you said.
Yay for Sheba, she looks very happy here!
I wish our dogs liked the water, but neither of them does. We did take them for ice cream yesterday, they do like that!
Sheba is still waiting for her ice cream, we need to get on that!
We hope you will still have access to your lake. Enjoy!
Looks like a nice place for a swim. It is sad when things sell and change. We have lost most of our tracking fields to new construction this summer. Happy Sunday!
It is sad. At least we have other places to go if we do lose this one. I hate to see things like this and your fields change. We used to have nothing but woods and a beautiful trail/dirt road below us when we first built our house. Now it is all houses down there and we can’t walk the loop we used to anymore.
It’s great to read that Sheba enjoyed the walk and the swim and that there were no bad aftereffects :o) I hope it’s still “your” lake even when the house there is sold…it happened with “our” forest, they have fences now everywhere and there are more signs than trees at this place :o(
I don’t see progress as a good thing when it takes away natural places we loved!
