It didn’t take long for Mother Nature to get back with the program! We got a huge snowstorm this week on Wednesday, at least 10 inches up here on our hill, and it’s back to being a winter wonderland here on the farm just like that!
The storm was just a bit temperamental at first, starting with some rain and ice, but by the time Luke and I got out of bed that morning, it was snowing hard. It wasn’t an easy day, since the ice started falling off the roof about 4 am when Dadz left for work, and Luke does not like that noise. So I huddled in bed with him with his Canine Coddler* over him and we both finally got back to sleep. When my alarm went off at 6 am, I could now hear snow sliding off the roof, so knew it had changed over. Luke was still sound asleep under his weighted blanket next to me, so I stayed in bed a little longer than usual so he wouldn’t wake up to hear that noise. You would think he’d be used to it by now, but he’s not. It seems to bother him more at night when he can’t see where the noise is coming from, I think, though during the day it sometimes starts him to shaking too. The low pressure system of this big storm triggered a migraine for me, so lingering in bed did not seem so bad. By the time we got up, things had settled down and Luke looked pretty excited about the snow when he went outside!

Then the power started flicking on and off, and that freaks out Luke too. So much of our day was spent like this.
Since I was fighting my headache that was OK. I don’t always give in to my headaches but this one was bad enough I didn’t feel like doing much else, so it all worked out fine. The power ended up being out for a couple hours, but that was better than the flicking on and off that scares Luke. We have a generator anyway so hardly knew the difference. We sat on the couch, Luke under his blanket, and just watched the snow.
It was a beautiful scene, except for the fact that it was pretty hard on the trees.
Once Dadz was home and I finally had a little catnap, my headache eased up quite a bit, and Luke was back to being his usual happy self when the power came back on for good. We missed our walk that day, but with the weight of all the snow on the trees, and branches falling down everywhere (which was what caused the power outages), I didn’t figure it was safe to be out in the woods under all that anyway. It did, however, make for a beautiful walk the next morning.
I had to bundle up and put my snowshoes on, and the walk was quite tiring, but it was so beautiful out there once again! Even with snowshoes the walking was tough for me, but Luke didn’t seem to have much trouble.
Only once did he drop behind me and walk in my tracks! With some tracks now established, the next walks will be easier. We do hear the temperatures are going to plunge though, so that may limit us as well. Either way, we just hope winter is now here to stay, and we can’t wait until the sun comes back out and shines on this sea of white!

Cold but pretty!
Wow, that’s quite a snow storm. It looks beautiful, but I wouldn’t want to life in it. How far did the birds venture out in that deep snow?
They didn’t leave their area until the driveway was plowed and they could get to the garage and porch without going through the snow. That haven’t gone in the deep stuff at all!
So pawretty!! Glad you got our fur a walkie da next day and dat your migraine went away 🙂 Mama needs to get me one of those weighted blankets. Her always bookmarks da page then furgets 😉 Her got me some of da hemp stuff buts I has not been on it fur long enough to tell a difference.

We hope the hemp eventually starts helping you, Matt. I know it takes time, and I also know with Luke it takes a combination of things to help him. I don’t know what’s up with those blankets, I’m not sure they’re making the large ones anymore? But I think there were some other options on amazon.
Also, we use calming chews from Only Natural Pet that seem to help some too.

That was some storm! Meanwhile we had partly sunny skies with temps in the upper 50s on Wednesday. On Friday temps started dropping and clouds hid the sun. And who knows for how long? It’s been raining since about 4 o’clock Saturday. Poor Shadow’s having a tough time of it. Hope your lilacs bounce back in the spring!!

I guess we were lucky in Massachusetts. Good thing because our generator is still not working.
I think the southern part of our state got off easier like you. Hope you can get that generator fixed before you need it!
Almost a perfect snow day! Hope the headache is gone, and you enjoy the weekend. Snow coming for us here in Virginia – At least that’s what’s forecast. We’ll see.

My headache has happily stayed away, probably because we’ve been storm free for about a week now. It’s been nice to see some sunshine, even though it’s been too cold.
Believe it or not I wish winter would return here! Oh, we’ve been cold, but we have had NO SNOW since November. Rumor has it that we might FINALLY get a storm late January 🙂
I can’t believe your snow-less! There’s nothing fun about the cold, that’s for sure, and around here cold with no snow can cause problems with the ground freezing too deep.
A day in snuggled up with a pup … ALMOST worth the nonsense of trudging through the snow to go out!

What a beautiful Winter Wonderland!! I sure hope the trees recover…especially the lilacs(they’re one of my favorite Spring/Summer smells)
I know, I love our lilacs too, they are my favorites. I told my hubby he needed to trim them, but since he didn’t, I guess Mother Nature decided to. LOL. They seem pretty hardy, so I think they’ll survive.
It is absolutely gorgeous on your farm. I cannot imagine going outside in that much snow. You are much tougher than I am since I have on a sweatshirt and it is 62 degrees. Hahaha!

You sure weren’t kidding, it looks like Old Man Winter moved in for a while. We have a whole house generator too but that power flickering on and off is still a pain. Enjoy your snow fun Luke!
Luckily the weather settled down, so things have been nice and quiet the last few days.

So sorry about your headache. I haven’t figured out a remedy for low pressure systems which do seem to impact the severity of them. But what a beautiful wonderland the storm created. Stay warm and cozy this weekend.

I am so glad that your headache finally let up so that you could enjoy that winter wonderland with Luke! I know the kind of pain and malaise you were feeling – ugh – I’m so sorry. But your walk the next morning must have been gorgeous!
It really was! And the snow stayed in the trees for several days too, so every walk has been so pretty. Now it’s gotten way too cold though, so we’ve been cutting our walks short and not going at all. The extra cold snow really bothers Luke’s paws, and there’s no way he’ll let me put boots on him. 🙁

mother nature used all tricks and effects of a real winter this time… I’m no fan of snow, but the first pawprints in fresh snow have something special ;O)))
It’s so true. Usually be the end of February, the novelty has worn off and I’ve had enough of it too! Though it’s more the cold temperatures that bother me than the snow.
We are so jealous. Our winter appears to be a total bust with too much warmth, and lots of ice. Enjoy the winter wonderland!

Beautiful pictures! I’m sorry this was such a stressful storm for you and for Luke–we haven’t had much snow here (which the dogs are far more upset about than I am), but the day before I came home from our holiday travels, a huge tree fell on a house and car in the middle of my street! Thankfully, things seemed to have calmed down a bit since then, but it’s still be extra windy and cold, so it hasn’t taken much to convince me to cut walks short and curl up with an extra cup of coffee!
Yikes, I bet you’re glad you weren’t home for that excitement! We had a lot of branches down around the yard, but luckily just smaller ones and not near the house or vehicles. It has still been windy here, and now very cold, so our walks have been pretty short if we get out at all. Luckily Luke enjoys curling up in front of the wood stove too!
