We didn’t get any direction on how to approach this week’s technical challenge of “Black & White”. I checked to see if my camera had a setting for shooting in black and white, but it did not. Editing a photo to black and white is the obvious way to go then, and I thought Luke would be the perfect subject, since he is a picture of black and white contrast all by himself!
I wanted his blacks to stand out, so finding a photo of him against the snow seemed ideal. I looked through some recent ones taken before we lost all of our snow. This one was taken with my iPhone after we got back from snowshoeing one day. Both Luke and Cricket had plenty of energy to spare that day!
It seems to me that in an ideal black and white photograph, the blacks would be deep black and the whites pure white. I hope we accomplished that here, or came close. I think the shadows add some interest to this as well.
I enjoy the old fashioned look of a black and white photo. Can your camera shoot in black and white, or have you edited photos to achieve this affect?
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Nice photo. I will have to check my camera.
Great job! I think you definitely accomplished it. In addition to deep black and pure white, I like all the variations of grey and shadow in the snow.
Cool shot! There’s something so beautiful and simple about B&W photography.
I love it!!!! I like the high contrast between the black on Luke and the white snow. I use software to convert photos to B&W. I actually don’t do it that much because I love vivid colors so much…
I can see why, with some of the gorgeous sunsets in your photos! 🙂
Help ! I was getting e-mail notices of your new posts until about 3 weeks ago – then they stopped, and now I don’t even see a place here to sign up for them ! Wha’ happen ! (I didn’t check in sooner because bloggers have a life and sometimes don’t post, but I am glad to see you are still here !)
Oh no! Thank you so much for letting me know, Mary. I was having issues with some emails getting kicked back as “undeliverable” and you may have been one of them. I added you again manually so hopefully that will fix it.
I post pretty religiously Monday – Friday (I don’t really have a life, ha-ha), so let me know if you don’t get an email on Monday, and if I get it kicked back, I will let you know so we can try to find a way to fix it. Thanks again!!
very very nice, Jan!
My phone does but I don’t think my big camera does so I have to edit. Great picture.
We love this pic. Luke really does show up well against the white snow.
I LOVE that picture in black and white … it’s a great contrast between the white snow and Luke front and center.
That’s terrific and we think the shadows are cool too!
Nice job! My photography professor in college always used to remind our B&W class to meter for the blacks, print for the whites. Boy what I could have done with editing software and technology back in those days! ????
I went to photography school back in the day, and we worked with black and white a lot back then. I’ve forgotten everything I learned though….LOL! I bet they do teach things a lot differently now (does anyone work in dark rooms anymore?).
Know just what you mean, I spent enough hours in a dark room myself to qualify as a human mole! LOL ????
I love black and white photography. We have several framed B & W in our home.
Skip’s work, I hope? I need to get more of my own photos on my walls!
I learned that the only way to get black and white now is with photo editing. Luke does look great in black and white and bright sun with lots of shadows makes great pictures. Love Dolly
Mom puts the camera setting on black and white sometimes and takes tons of pics

We were disappointed at the way this week was rather forgotten. Hopefully the challenge will revive and keep going as we are enjoying it. Aren’t b/w dogs fun to photograph in b/w? Your photo came out nice!
Thank you! It was fun using Luke for this one. I actually started with Sam but couldn’t find a good white background for her. I did get some good black on black photos of her for other use though!
I was disappointed with the challenge as well. I almost didn’t even do a post (except I had nothing else planned). It’s not looking too promising going forward. I’m thinking we might end up having to find another challenge (unless someone else maybe takes that one over).
Great B&W pic! The shadows give it an interesting effect, almost like an Alfred Hitchcock movie.
My camera does have a setting for it, though at the moment I can’t recall what it’s called. Monochrome, maybe? Anyway, yes, I do like the old fashioned look at times.
I did find a setting on my camera that I thought was black & white, but it actually did some kind of color splash thing. I might have to play with that one more in the future, it did look like fun.
i agree the shadow is great, like Luke’s walking buddy :o)
