It’s been over 9 months since Sheba had her cancerous tumor removed, and as we approach her 11th birthday, we feel pretty good with where she’s at. It’s been plenty long enough that we know our vet got the entire tumor removed, though we’ll always have the worry of more cancer showing up. So we keep plugging away a little bit at the bucket list I made for her.
She’s had lots of walks and swims, along with a special hike this summer. She’s been enjoying destroying many stuffed toys, as we continue our search for toys that will hold up to her and Luke! We may have found one but we’ll share about that at another time, because it’s lived for at least a couple weeks now but we don’t want to jinx it.
Item 3 on the list was to go apple picking. We had taken our beagle Kobi apple picking the fall before he passed away, and I have such wonderful memories of that day. I also had a fear of history repeating itself….taking Sheba apple picking as well almost seemed like we were tempting fate, and I worried about it meaning we might lose her too after doing it. I know, it seems silly, but I can’t help it. I decided if we at least took her to a different orchard than we had taken Kobi, that might make it safe. We’ve been crazy busy lately too, and that orchard is at least an hour’s drive away, so it worked better to pick one closer to home anyway (Sheba doesn’t love riding either so that was another good reason).
I had seen signs for an orchard just one town over from us, nothing fancy but a family owned orchard that promised nice views. With the fall foliage just starting to turn that seemed like a nice alternative.

Sheba gets a little nervous and excited when going to new places, which makes it challenging to get good photos of her. She’s not cooperative about sitting still for photos even at home! I think she relaxed and enjoyed walking around the orchard after a bit though, and we did get some decent photos.

We were there on the very last day the orchard was open for the season, but there were still plenty of apples to pick. There were not many other people there either, but as we were leaving we ran into a nice family and they asked if their kids could pet Sheba. Sheba sucked up the attention and loved it! I think she really enjoyed her special outing with the Momz and Dadz, and I will say hopefully that we will be taking her again next year!

What a cool outing! Sheba did look like she had a fun day. I thoroughly enjoy taking my pups along for little adventures, and thankfully with fall approaching, there will be more of those soon.
What’s fun too is that there are so many orchards around here that we get to try different ones each time – they all seem to allow dogs. We have our own apple trees at our new house, but I’ll still want to visit the orchards (this year is just too crazy and the crops aren’t that good because it’s been so dry). Most have beautiful views and walking trails too which make it more fun.
what a great bucket list adventure. Fun day and some nice apples and pictures!
What a fun time. Beautiful photos.
Lucky Sheba what a fun outing! Love Dolly
I’m not sure what are picking schedule is. I know the farm stand that the local orchard runs is open until the beginning of December and I’m pretty sure they continue to have apples, they just might not be as big.
What a lovely memory you just made, I’m sure you all enjoyed that special day.
We did really enjoy it. I don’t know why the orchards close so early here, especially when there was still so many apples on the trees. Of course I do think this year was unusually good for apples, and maybe they already had plans to go south before winter gets here. LOL
Your orchards finish early. Ours are open to at least Halloween and usually to Thanksgiving. Looks like a wonderful outing.
I don’t understand why they close so early….there were still tons of apples on the trees (you can see that in some of the photos). I know some of the other orchards use the late apples for making their cider and such, but I don’t think this place did that. It seems kind of wasteful, but maybe they do something with them.
Congratulations on reaching 9 months post-surgery. Looks like Sheba had a fantastic time at the apple orchard. It looks like that apple may have been almost too big for her to bite.
Sheba!! You are rockin’ it girl!!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
How fun! We’re glad Sheba got to knock off another thing from her bucket list. We hope she continues to do well.
You’re not alone in the “silly superstitions” department at all. Maybe they are silly, but those of us who have “been there and done that” totally get it and stand with you 100%! I can’t even walk into the exam room at the vet’s where we all said goodbye to Callie let alone bring Shadow or Ducky in there. Superstition? Maybe. But right now it’s more jumbled emotions than anything else.
Glad you, hubby, and Sheba had a great time at the apple orchard! I wish we had one close by to take Shadow to while Ducky’s at daycare!
I can totally understand wanting to avoid that exam room, I can see where it would make you emotional. I would feel exactly the same way.
Two of our dogs died at home when we were not here. To this day, I have a tough time ever leaving the dogs. Thank God we were here when Kobi died. That’s probably half the reason we’ve become such homebodies.
I am so jealous of the apple orchards! I have never seen an apple tree before and would love to experience it. Those apples are ginormous! I understand your train of thought. I am ridiculously superstitious about those type of things. ♥
I know, have you ever seen such big apples? We have so many orchards around here, I think we take it for granted! Well, I try not to, and try to enjoy them every fall.
Hopefully we’ll break the superstition this year, because I still can’t help but think about it…and I’d like to take Cricket as well next year.
You can just see how happy she is in these pictures! I’m glad you got to have such a happy, fun fall adventure!
I love that you made a bucket list for your senior dog. I need to do this for my 12 year-old Collie mix. We even have an orchard available to the public! I hope you get to make many more memories with your pup.
Thank you so much! We have always gone apple picking every fall, and then I would start seeing dogs there, and finally thought why not bring our dogs too? Kobi was also getting older then, and he started a new tradition!
I’m glad she crossed another thing off her bucket list! It looks like this orchard was perfect. I would have been superstitious to go back to the other one as well. Sheba looks so excited in that last photo, I hope she enjoyed an apple of her own (minus the seeds and core of course.)
We’ve been sharing the apples with her, and we’ll be making some special apple treats for her birthday!
Sheba, that looks like such a fun fall activity. And hanging with your people is the best. They love you so much and it shows!! Hope your having a nice day.
That is great. My mom would worry about the history repeating itself thing too, but it was a good idea and she had a good time.
You go girl! Love this post. You can do whatever you want to do
Lily & Edward
that’s not silly, I would feel the same. that apples are super big, wow! you should send them to our stores, so they would learn that apples haven’t the same size like cherry tomatoes… it’s outrageous what small mummies they currently offer to the people :o( I hope you got a truckload of that super tasty apples, Sheba.
She’s been getting lots of apples! We will even be making some special apple treats for her birthday this weekend. 🙂
