The photo below was taken two days after Luke broke a nail. I’ve found out that you don’t always have to panic when a dog breaks a nail, though I did a little bit at first. Any injury like this that could potentially require a visit to the vet can be especially stressful when you have a dog as reactive as Luke is. Vet visits are a challenge, as I wrote about in our post “Luke’s Progress Report“.
I might have more of a care than Luke does here, since I had thrown that comforter over the bed to protect my brand new quilt from a potentially bleeding nail. He saw fit to move it around, and the back paw with the broken nail is barely or not at all on the cover! We got through the broken nail without a visit to the vet (and without getting blood on my quilt!), and on Monday I’ll tell you all the details about it; and why you probably don’t need to panic when your dog breaks a nail.
♥ We hope you have a wonderful weekend without a care in the world! ♥
LOL. Just like a dog to mess up the plan.
Always glad to read a happy ending story! Well done on the nail and keeping the quilt clean!
We hope it didn’t hurt too much.
It did not even seem to bother him at all, so that was a blessing. Thank you!
Bentley has broken his dewclaw nail twice and it breaks my heart each time. It never seems to faze him. I hope Luke’s heals quickly. ♥
This happened a couple weeks ago, so he’s all healed up now! It never fazed Luke either – our boys are tough! 🙂
At least the comfy looks wonderful!
such a sweet, sweet photo!
When Shadow broke her nail, it was really close to the edge of the nail bed. I didn’t realize it until we were at the vet’s and he showed me. But I panicked a little because I couldn’t stop the bleeding completely. It would stop and start – she did a good job on it! – so I called the vet and was able to get her in right away.
Glad your quilt escaped the blood! And glad Luke’s nail is healing!!
Luke’s did not bleed at first, but did later. But I did learn some hints for stopping the bleeding, which I’ll share on Monday.
I’m glad you didn’t have to panic! The way I knew that Bar had to go to the vet was because she was more worried about it than I was. She’s usually so stoic that I knew when she was just holding her paw up and crying when I tried to look at it that we needed to go. And sadly, even after the vet, I still got blood on my quilt when we took the bandage off! Ugh. I’m glad your quilt made out better!
Trust me, I was completely ready to panic, but I was able to talk to our vet and she helped me to relax (it was in the evening, after hours, of course! Isn’t it always?)
Poor Barley! Luke never seemed to be in any pain at all, but I think it all depends on how and where it actually breaks as to how bad it is.
It would have been just my luck to get blood on a brand new quilt. It’s kind of like whenever you change your bed and put clean stuff on it, and that’s exactly when someone decides to throw up on it that night! LOL
I hope you can nail it luke and it heals up quickly…hugs to you and afabulous weekend ;o)
Mom’s last dog Trine ripped her nail out chasing a tennis ball down the street. It was a bloody mess, but it was Germany on a weekend night, no vet. She figured it out, and it actually happened a second time to the same dog a few years later, but Mom was then equipped to handle it. Katie lost a nail as well without the vet. It is no fun, but it isn’t as bad as it seems when it first happens. Poor Luke, hope it is healing well.
This happened a couple weeks ago, so it is all healed up now, thank you. It never seemed to bother him much, other than when I annoyed him by trying to look at it all the time!
Moses was our only other dog that ever broke a nail, and I did take him to the vet. Although from what I’ve learned now, I probably didn’t have to.
Pretty quilt, and poor Luke broken nails aren’t fun. So glad you didn’t have to go to the vet.
We really got lucky this time, that the way he broke it was conducive to healing on its own.
