Luke does not know that the job of a pool boy is to HELP with the pool. Instead, he makes filling the pool into quite the project. This pool we have has a removable plug which is very convenient for draining it. The only problem is that Luke learned as a puppy last year that the plug could be pulled and it was fun to run around with it (and he did not forget this over the winter). I worried he’d swallow it. Finally, we came up with the solution of putting the plug in from underneath so he couldn’t steal it.
But that means picking up the pool, after first trying to rinse the dirt out from the last use, and then trying to get the plug in. That is not easily done when Luke wants to do two things: get in the pool before you can fill it, and play with the water coming out of the hose!

Meanwhile, while you’re trying to do all of this, Cricket also expects you to be throwing the ball!

Does anyone else’s dog like to play with the hose? Our only other dog that’s done that was our Lab mix Maggie. She loved it, until one day she was afraid of it. We’re not sure what happened….but our elderly neighbor used to care for her sometimes and we wonder if he sprayed her too hard with it, or she jumped in when he was power washing or something. I try to be careful to turn the power of the spray down when Luke wants to play, and he just loves it!

We had a kiddie pool for Callie and Shadow when they were pups; but they wouldn’t stay in it. Callie would sit for about 5-10 seconds and then get out; and Shadow would lay down next to it and chew on the outside lip of it. We finally got rid of it. I’d like to get a pool for Ducky — one like yours — but Sam says “NO!” I might go buy one anyway if I can find a bargain.
I think a black dog like Ducky who feels the heat more definitely needs a pool! The regular plastic kiddie pools are usually pretty cheap. But you might be able to find one like ours on Craigs List or something like that pretty cheap too.
Taffy and I are totally NOT interested in the pool or the hose. Mom tries but she just ends up sitting with her feet it. Love Dolly
I’ve been known to stand in the pool too when it’s really hot! Our beagle Kobi never liked it either….we couldn’t even coax him in there with a treat. 🙂
Mine don’t play with the hose, but based on your comments on your pictures I would guess Luke is somehow related to Delilah. LOL If I go to put a towel down over their bed, she walks on the towel while I’m working on it. I can’t tell you how many times I need to move that dog OUT.OF.MY.WAY.
Does she help you make the bed too? That’s one of Luke’s favorites….stand or lie on the bed when you want to make it, or even better, chew on the pillows!
Ducky likes to chew on the sheets and pillowcases! That’s why I don’t allow her in the bedrooms when I’m changing the sheets.
Yes, I have to block all of the dogs out of the bedroom when I’m changing the bed! It’s like a magnet. 🙂
Oh how this made me smile! We had a foster dog who was OBSESSED with the hose! He now has a new home and his own pool too!
I like that pool and the fact that it has a plug!
These are really hard to find, and we lucked out when some friends found someone giving one away (they already had one like it, and we loved the plug too!).
Haha! I have one that likes to go crazy with the hose like that. 🙂 That is a really neat pool! We just got our kiddie pools out for the dogs. Let the summer water fun begin!
Our friends had a pool like this and then somehow someone gave them another one. They were going to give it away to someone else, and we begged them to let us have it! They aren’t made any more so are really hard to find.
Great shots Jan…Doc and Forrest love their pool..not the hose..love the dam love the reservoir ..not the bath?? i never get it..Our Rottweiler Eich he used to love the pool the water the hose the sprinkler..we had to get a metal sprinkler as he loved to chew it while it was going..miss him he was a darling boy.
The boys pool here is a big inground pond insert..deep enough for a lab and had no plug..so hubby put a hole in the side so we drain it with a hose into the garden..waste not here sadly..we have not yet put it up for the cold months and even now when the temp is down after a play Doc jumps in ..ewww dirty water ..yet bath??? 🙂 hugs Bev xx
We put fresh water in the pool almost daily (Miss Sheba won’t go in it unless it’s fresh!), but the other two don’t care how dirty it is. We have to keep it empty when not in use, because we don’t want to breed mosquitoes (we have enough as it is).
That’s actually a great idea to drain it into the gardens….I like to conserve. We have a rain barrel to collect water which I use in my gardens.
I think somehow baths are just totally different than any other kind of water play! xxoo
Yep baths are a whole different thing hahahah..we had very few mozzies this year but wasps in almost plague proportions..we sure do not have enough water at the moment for them anyway…:) loves Bev xx
We always say that we need to get our boys a pool. I don’t know if either would play in it though. I think my son will get Paisley on and we will try it! LOL!
Oh, I bet Paisley will love it, Melissa! Our beagle Kobi never liked the pool, I think maybe a lot of hound dogs aren’t that fond of water? We think Cricket is a bit unusual….but she really purely uses it to cool off! She’ll lay right down in there, and even Luke and Sheba don’t lie down in it….they just stand in it (yet they’ll happily swim in a lake).
MOL! We can see what a big help they all were.
That’s hilarious!
My first Boston had a thing for sprinklers. He’d put his whole mouth over them and try to stop the water. It made walking on spring mornings a little….interesting. So many water stops!
Jean from Welcome to the Menagerie
I think this is how I would describe what Bear used to do, Jan! I loved watching him and the sprinklers, he would bark at it too, before trying to stop that water flow-tail waggin the whole time! Love the pics of the puppies with the pool filling, too cute! Dad had patience, yay!!
I definitely always think of Bear when Luke is playing with the hose, Lynn, I remember that he used to love it too!
Did he cough and choke sometimes, Jean? Luke sometimes tries to stop the water and ends up getting a bit too much of it! Thanks for coming by!
Yup! That’s just what happened!
Mr. N is anti-water so it’s not something we have to worry about at our house!
Our beagle Kobi would have nothing to do with the pool either….even when we’d float treats in there!
Funny pics! Our family beagles all loved to play with the hose, but not Rita! It’s a bummer cuz I used to love those hose games and it’s a good way to cool off in the summer, but she’s afraid of the hose. (Oh well, with our drought we probably shouldn’t play hose games anyway!)
My guys love water but not playing with the hose. I think they blame it for an awful lot of summer baths 😉
Yes, that might ruin the hose for them…LOL! We have always done the baths inside the house, and maybe we’d better continue to!
So cute to see how excited they were for the pool, just like little kids.
The weather is supposed to be extremely warm here tomorrow. I can’t wait to watch Jax in their little pool. When I bring their water bowl outside he thinks it’s for play and puts his paws in it. So this should be interesting. Love how Luke likes to play with the hose. He’s such a character. Love looking at his photos!
Thank you, Cathy! I hope you’ll be sharing some photos of how Jax did in the pool….their first time is so much fun (unless they refuse to go in…..).
That’s so cute! They’re all so excited to have the pool filled and to celebrate warm, summertime weather. Haley loves the hose, but I think she might have been sprayed hard a couple of times too because she’s always cautious at first before trying to bite the water now. Fun post!
Oh you are your own fountain, well that’s pawsome… and you look much cuter than all that artifical fountains in castles or parks :o)
hahahaha! What a fun post!!!! That last photo of Luke is just priceless!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
How cute! Barley and Soth both have one track minds like that, too–if they want something, they are going to do whatever it takes to get it even if they haven’t seen the thing in months. It’s a good thing they’re so cute 🙂
They are just like “kids!!!”
LOL it is a day long project. Our dogs like the sprinkler.
Oh yes, sprinkler! I think we have one kicking around somewhere and I wanted to try to set it up for Luke…I think he’d have fun with that too.
Bailie enjoys drinking out of the hose, otherwise, I like to get into the pool asap and I sit in it while it fills up with the hose in it. Luke just likes to play, we think he sounds like a fun pool boy!
Luke is definitely all about fun! The funny thing is that Cricket is the only one that actually lies down in the pool like you do, Emma. Sheba and Luke will stand in it only, though Luke frequently sticks his nose under the water!
