Welcome, October!
October is proving to be just as busy as September, but our weather has just been perfect. It has been cool and sunny, and the foliage is just starting to reach its peak here. We had the perfect week for #DogWalkingWeek – not one drop of rain until it was over! However, as I told you in my September (In)Sanity post, our house is on the market and we are shopping for a new one.
About the same time we made that decision, my hubby and I found out that the business we both work for might be going up for sale. It is a general store, I am the bookkeeper and my hubby runs the deli. We’ve both worked there for over 20 years, so this was not good news for us. We’ll see what happens there, but we are trying not to worry about it too much. So as you can see, we’ve been right out straight and I’ve had a lot on my mind. But we still had some time while on our walks to enjoy the colors of autumn.

Luke was not happy that with all my distractions, I neglected to pay attention to the weather forecast. I was not prepared for our first frost, so we lost a good part of the last of the green bean crop (the beans kept coming in spite of the deer eating the plants!). I was able to salvage a few along with some tomatoes, but other than carrots that are in the ground, gardening season is over and all we’re left with is the clean up.

Speaking of carrots, Luke showed me again the other day just how smart he is. I had pulled some carrots up in the garden, and as always, he was waiting for me on the other side of the garden gate, hoping for a carrot. I told him he had to wait while I rinsed them. That smart guy ran right up into the yard where the hose is hanging, as if he knew exactly what I said! He may not have really understood what I said, but he remembers that when I pull up veggies, I take them there to rinse them. Then of course, he had to steal one from the pile after rinsing, he couldn’t wait for me to give him one! I just couldn’t be mad at him, and I was going to give him one anyway.
Who has time to read?

In all our busyness, I also neglected to send out a huge thank you to our friends at Cat Chat With Caren and Cody. We won this fun book on their blog over the summer, and received it last month. This is a very amusing book for cat lovers. It’s fun to have sitting out on a table for cat crazy friends to pick up and take a minute to read one of the funny quotes that they could surely relate to! I love the illustrations, and you can see a sample on the right.
Our friend Jackie also sent us an advance copy of her newest book, and I can’t wait to dive into that. I thoroughly enjoyed her last two books. I’ve been reading other reviews of this new one, so I know it’s going to be a great read. I need to take a day off from everything and just sit and read….I wanted to get my own review of it up in time for the release date but I’m not sure if I’m going to find that day before then. Keep watching for it though, because it will be coming.
House Trained is the story of a childless dog mom, whose life turns to chaos when the teenage daughter her hubby never knew he had shows up on their doorstep, with her own child in tow. Her dog welcomes them while she struggles with it. Will she learn from her dog? Maybe you don’t want to wait for me, order your own copy now! Read more about it and find out where you can order by clicking here.
Other Fun Coming Soon
- Our cancer survivor Sheba got to cross something off her bucket list yesterday! Can you tell where we are? We’ll be letting you know more about that and a new food she is trying soon…we got some great photos.
- We also recently received some new grooming tools to try out. Watch this week for our review of those, and don’t forget, because there will also be a giveaway!
- Both Sheba and Luke have birthdays at the end of this month! Sheba is going to be 11 and Luke will be 2. We haven’t decided yet what we’ll be doing for a celebration. We had a big bash last year also celebrating Cricket’s Gotcha Day which is the same day as Luke’s birthday, so it will probably be a bit more laid back this year.
Has your October been busy so far? What special fun do you have going on or planned?
oh my gosh you have had a bunch of stuff going on. Selling your house and looking for a new one how exciting and bittersweet after all the hard work you did on your memory garden. I hope everything works out with your jobs. 20 years working together and still married how great for you guys.
I know….leaving behind the memory garden will be tough. I hope to take parts of it with me so I can re-create it elsewhere and still have all our past pets with us in spirit anyway.
Thank you! I know a lot of couples couldn’t work together, but we each do our own thing there now and I think that helps. For quite a few years we worked more closely together…I’m not sure we would have been able to keep that up for this long though!
You are flat out. And it’s times like that where we can really learn to appreciate it when we have those down days. Days where we can just sit. 🙂 I hope you get that soon and can read the book because it’s amaaaaazing.
Our October has been spectacular too! A little cooler than expected, but IMO perfect. 🙂
Two already? It seems like just yesterday you were excited about the puppy you were getting. 🙂
I know, right? I can’t believe he’s going to be 2 either.
I plan to read your review of the book today, and then to make my plan for when I get to read it! I am going to visit a friend in Mass. this weekend, but after that I might actually have a couple weekends pretty free. I hope I can squeeze it in then, if everything else stays quiet! 🙂
You sure have a lot on your plate right now. I cannot believe Luke will be 2.
I know, where has the time gone??
Wonderful pictures of happy pups veggies gardens blooming..all wonderful..not good about the jobs..Hubby was told a few weeks ago that after 26 years he is being retrenched form his management position..this has been part of the reason i have been awol a lot from blogs as we try and deal with what this means..he finishes end of November..it has been handle badly and with a great lack of respect so i understand your fears…hoping all works out well my friend Loves Bev xxx
Bev, I am so sorry that you and your hubby are going through that too. I hope you are getting everything figured out.
It’s a good thing we have our pets and our beautiful outdoors to get us through these tough times, isn’t it? xxoo
Thanks Jan..until we speak to the finance person thursday we are still up in the air..i can’t wait for him to finish..they are sending him all over the country training and it is pretty hard..ugh..but we will be fine..and yes thankfully we have the outdoors and the pets…Doc has been unwell for a month now and we are trying to get in top of it..back to the vet again tomorrow..been there the last four weeks..urghh..but hoping to get some results eventually..paws crossed 🙂 hugs and loves to you all xx Bev
I’m so sorry Doc has been unwell on top of everything else, Bev. I hope they get things figured out so he can be on the mend soon. xxoo
Thankyou Jan he is much better today…the spray we got at the vet seems to be helping a lot..one problem at a time is how we roll 🙂 hugs and loves Bev xxx
Well that stinks having jobs up in the air! Hopefully it will all work out. I’m guessing the house hasn’t sold?
No, things are going pretty slowly with the house. If we could get just one thing settled, that would help! 🙂
You sure do have a lot on your plate right now…and it’s not food! 😀 We’re glad you can take some time and enjoy the simple pleasures like the flowers and fall colors…before things get too crazy for you. Purrs….
I hope everything works out! And I hope the rest of the month is calmer.
Some terrific photos and such a newsy post! I don’t envy you moving or the stress about your jobs. Hope you can take some time soon to destress and enjoy Jackie’s new book.
Thanks! I think a day off from everything with just that good book and a cup of coffee might be just what I need! 🙂
Oh I can’t wait to hear what Sheba got a chance to do!
October sounds like a super busy month!!! LOL! Lots of birthdays too!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
Thanks for the shout out for Cody and I am so glad you love that adorable book!
First and foremost I am keeping you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers. I do know how hard that is and the uncertainty makes it even worse.
Sending much love! xoxo
Thank you so much, Caren! It is the uncertainty that is the worst. It’s difficult to move forward when you don’t know where you’re going! Your thoughts and prayers are great appreciated. xxoo
I hope that everything works out for your jobs. It is a scary prospect that I understand all too well. Our local GM plant closed a couple of months before my husband’s 30 year anniversary working there. Try not to worry too much, it doesn’t help. ♥ I’ll be thinking of you.
Thank you, Melissa! It’s a long story, but this store has been in our boss’ family for many, many years, so we hope he will decide not to sell it. But his wife is pressuring him, so you never know. If we were just a little closer to retirement it might not seem so bad, but we’re just far enough away to make it difficult.
Well, we thought we were busy until we read this! Goodness you have a lot on your plate, but Luke seems to give you lots of enjoyment hopefully leveling things off some. Love Dolly
Having the regular routine of the dogs as much as possible will be the only thing that keeps me sane through all this! 🙂
Luke wants to eat his veggies 🙂 They are so smart. Happy birthday to Sheba and Luke!!
Shadow’s 11th birthday – which is also Callie’s half-year birthday – is this Friday (the 16th). The only thing I have planned right now is for Ducky to be at daycare so Shadow can have us to herself, at least for a few hours. We’ve been keeping their birthdays pretty low-key anyway. I do have a birthday blog post planned for Friday though -like the one I did for Callie’s birthday back in April – so watch for that. Sheba’s birthday is the 25th, isn’t it?
And ditto what Hailey and Zaphod said!!
Thank you! I will have to be sure to stop by to wish Shadow a Happy Birthday tomorrow! It sounds like you have the perfect day planned for her. Yes, Sheba’s birthday is the 25th…good memory! I love that our golden girls are the same age.
Hope everything works out with the house and business so you can relax.
Thank you! All this waiting around to see what happens does not agree with me. I just want to know things one way or another!
Wow! You’ve had a lot going on lately. I love how much Luke loves his veggies. Barley loves lettuce–but only when it’s been at the grocery store! I’ve tried giving her the exact same kind straight out of my parents’ garden and she just turns up her nose! Silly girl.
That’s too funny! I think lettuce is something I haven’t tried with Luke yet, we might have to do that. It’ll have to come from the store now anyway, since growing season is over here! 🙂
that looks a little like Stonehenge… maybe you were there with Sheba? I sometimes wonder how smart dogs can be, I bet Luke showed you the way to the hose in case you furgot it :o) … and always when such things happen there is food included somehow… a miracle LOL
Ha ha, so true…I am going to be needing Luke as I get older to help me remember where things are!
