July 31st and December 2nd are both celebrated as National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day.
Luke says he prefers to be called a “mixed breed” though I think “mutt” has a better ring to it for this day. However, we respect his wishes. π
National Mutt Day was started in 2005 to raise awareness for mixed breed dogs in need of homes. Mixed breeds make up 80% of the dogs in shelters. One good thing about this awful pandemic is that I hear there are less pets in shelters these days.
We got Luke as a puppy from a rescue; his mama had given birth to her pups just hours after being rescued from a high-kill shelter. While he is a mix of several different breeds, who really knows how many, he has mostly traits of the Labrador retriever. He also shows his hound dog traits too though; he has an amazing nose!
This is the perfect time to adopt a mixed breed dog if you can, or simply make a donation to your local shelter to support their efforts in finding homes for these amazing dogs. β₯
My brother’s family adopted a pup in May that looks like Luke’s younger brother! The similarity in appearance is striking. With all this COVID stuff, I haven’t met Tucker yet – but it’s something to look forward to! Whatever you call it – mutt or mixed breed – total perfection.
Truth!! β₯
Mutt or mixed breed, Luke is handsome and a wonderful boy.
Thank you! β₯
I’ve never cared if dogs were mixes or purebreds, we all know what counts is what’s inside. I wish more people would see that, and give the handsome mixes like Luke with so much love to give a chance. I applaud the shelters that get the purebreds out of the shelters to rescues ASAP to give the mixes a chance, because there is no doubt whatsoever, that they deserve and should have a good life too!! —And I love the quote!!
We’ve had both and they are all wonderful! When we adopted Luke we were actually looking for a mutt, because our first two dogs were mutts and they were so great. We fell into purebreds by accident, all coming from people we knew; but I was always saying I wanted another mutt too. π
Luke your so handsome.
Happy National Mixed Breed Day cutie! XO
Us hooligans are mutts, too, or as petcretary likes to call us, our breed is Muttski! Of course there are thousands of variations in this breed, BOL!
And whatever your genes may be, Luke, they made you into a very handsome eyecatcher!!
Dalton appears to be part Rat Terrier, and part dachshund, and perhaps chihuahua…Benji s such a rag bag, who knows! (Some kind of terrier/schnauzer mix”) We should do DNA tests to discover their true heritage.
Every mutt is unique, that’s for sure, right? π
Mutt…mixed breed…it doesn’t matter, Luke. You’re still handsome!
happy National Mixed Breed Day, Luke! You are nobody’s mutt, my friend. XXOO
