Just in time for Christmas we’ve got some handmade catnip toys in our shop! I’ve been wanting to make these for a while, using our 100% organic catnip (of course) that we grow right here on the farm. I was inspired by our friend Ellen who gave some handmade toys to our Angel kitty Samantha one time. I needed something simple that didn’t require sewing, knitting, or crocheting! I found a huge bag of quilt squares at a thrift store, and with just that and a pair of craft scissors, we were in business!
However, I needed to know if cats would really play with them or not, and since we’re sadly cat-less at this time we had to outsource our testing once again to Cousin Nina (which we sometimes had to, even when our fussy Sam was still with us!). Nina did a great job of testing and gave us some important feedback. My sister (Nina’s Mom) added her ideas which were a big help and we were ready to go!
I put three toys with different fabrics in a bag along with some loose catnip to get the smell on those toys really well. Each toy is also filled with catnip, and could easily be untied to add more when needed.
However, quantities are limited since our catnip crop is getting low due to winter weather. We have a new crop started indoors, but that will take some time to be ready. Nina says get ’em while you can! 🙂
