The first snow of the season is usually a momentous occasion for the Wag ‘n Woof K9 crew. Some things have changed this year, however. Our beagle Cricket is normally very excited about the first snow, and can’t wait to get out there and play ball in it. But her arthritis has changed all that. Again, I have to feel that we made the best decision ever to move to this new home. I dread to think how Cricket would have fared on all the snow covered stairs that had to be maneuvered over to get to the yard from the deck at our old house. Here there are only 3 stairs at the most and as it is she tries to fly down those and often lands on her beagle butt (and gets right up to keep going).
Our Sunday morning started out with rain but the temperatures dropped and it soon turned to snow. After I got some projects done around the house I bundled up to head outside with them. Cricket did have fun cruising around the yard in the snow, but it wasn’t long before I saw this:

I imagine the sudden drop in temperatures (it was 60 degrees the previous day!) didn’t agree with Cricket either, and her sore joints aren’t going to like the cold so much this year. This makes me sad, but luckily someone was available to fill in for Cricket and show some excitement about the fresh snow!

I still think Cricket enjoyed the snow some. She and Sheba were outside for quite a while after they had their supper that evening, in the dark. There seems to be something about digging in the snow, and smelling things through the snow that is special. The first snow signals the change in seasons, and this year it brought other changes to adapt to as well. Such is life.
Have you seen any snow where you are yet?

I’m so jealous! We had a few flakes here Saturday morning, but nothing that stuck.
Gosh you got a good amount of snow and the dogs looked like that had a blast.
Luke and Sheba were having a good time in the snow.
Too bad they don’t make all-weather doggy leg warmers for Cricket. Hopefully she enjoys the winter and doesn’t have too much arthritis pain.
There won’t be any snow here, but hopefully we’ll get lots of rain to help our drought.
We needed rain here too, and they say if everything freezes the drought will continue right through the winter. It looks like we might warm up and get some rain this weekend though.
I am going to try to find some kind of booties for Cricket to wear outside. Maybe if she can get around a little better out there she’ll enjoy it more.
I’m sorry Cricket wasn’t able to enjoy the snow as much as usual. I will be heartbroken when that day comes for Barley. I’m glad that Luke and Sheba were able to have some fun, though. That video is so cute! We didn’t get any snow this weekend, and while I’m glad that I didn’t have to clean off the car on Monday morning, I was really looking forward to Barley getting to play in snow without a leash for the first time in her life.
Well, that will give you something to look forward to still, along with Rye’s first snow too, so I hope you get some snow soon! It sounds like we’re going to have a warm up here so all of our snow might be gone soon.
I knew this day would come with Cricket, and I knew it would break my heart. At least she still enjoys playing with toys in the house, and chewing on her balls (as well as snarling at Luke if he tries to steal it – LOL).
Oh my gosh snow already! The gang had fun!
Beautiful snow, beautiful pups. It looks like all of the dogs had a fun time in the first snow.
We’re glad to see the dogs having fun in the snow. We had some flurries the other day…that was enough for us!
We don’t have any snow yet; but with temps in the 50s and low 60s, I don’t think our chances are very good. Although, with the cloud cover and cool breeze it feels more like low-to-mid 40s out in the back right now. Shadow and Ducky were enjoying it, but my toes and fingers were turning to ice cubes.
Ducky and Luke would have a blast together doing the zoomed around the yard! Poor Shadow can’t keep up with Ducky like she used to, bless her heart. I may have to put her back on the carprofen for the rest of the year.
Zoomies, you stupid autocorrect. ????
I knew what you meant. π And they definitely would have fun!
It’s been pretty darn cold here too, with very little sun, and that I don’t like! But I guess it’s supposed to warm up and rain over the weekend. That will put an end to what snow is left in the yard!
Snow is so rare around here that it is always exciting for humans and dogs. I don’t expect any snow here but we can always hope. β₯
You never know, right? Maybe a Christmas miracle? π
Looks like the crew is having fun to whatever degree they can! We had the same thing – 60s on Saturday, then a sudden drop. We only had flurries and hail, though, not a full snow – very disappointing! And now it’s still really cold and very windy. Daisy seems to be loving it, taking her time on her walks and enjoying sticking her nose up into the wind. π
It’s been windy and cold here too, and the snow has been hanging around! But I guess it’s going to warm up and rain over the weekend, so it will probably all get washed away. π
As I get older, first snow isn’t nearly exciting as it once was so I empathize with Cricket. Snow is somewhat overrated even though I know we need it to feed rivers and lakes. π
I only enjoy it some because the dogs enjoy it. It is very pretty too, especially in the woods after a fresh coating. But I could live without it too! I especially hate driving in it.
The last time it snowed here was 1960. We like it that way.
We only had a dusting, and may get an inch today, but it is still too warm and will be melting, sadly
It stayed cold here for a few days, and we got a couple inches, so some is still around. But they’re saying a warm up and rain for the weekend. Bummer.
Oh Brrrrr Humbug, that made my whiskers shiver!
What fun! Where’s your coat!
Lily & Edward
The bad Momz forgot to get Luke’s coat out! He has one now. π
Glad to hear Cricket got to enjoy the snow a little bit. I find that as I’ve gotten a little older, each winter is less fun than the last one. Just makes me long for the long, hot days of summer!
By the time I’m really old, I’m pretty sure I’ll just be hibernating all winter!
wow cricket you look like a vice versa dalmatian with all that white snow-dots :o) we have just rain… I hope it will not become snow… at least my dad does all to heat up our area with leaving all doors open LOL
We had snow the other day. Torrey went outside and was so excited. She knows it snows just for her. Roxy…not so much. She did her business and wanted back in fast. I had to clear a little potty spot for her, that she was happy for. That snow melted, but I think we are supposed to get more soon.
